Hand Files
Are tools which are used to remove material
in the form of small chips from the workpieces
made of metal, plastic or wood. It serves to change the
size, shape or surface finish of faces, to remove irregularities,
to deburr, chamfer or round off edges, and to make parts fit
hand files consist of:
Single-Cut File
Type of files with rows of teeth arrange in
Diagonal position . This type of file is used to cut
Soft materials such as lead, tin, soft aluminum,
Plastic materials, etc. there are however, special
Single cut files used for hard metal such as steel.
Double-Cut File
This type of file are cut in rows which
Cross each other diagonally. The teeth are arranged
Beside and behind one another. Used to cut hard
Materials such as steel, brass, bronze and hard
Plastic. Etc.
Rasp Cut
This type of file are cut and spaced individually.
Files. with a rasp cut are used to cut wood and other
Similar soft materials.
Curve Tooth
This type of file design for smooth, rapid work
on all materials from the softest aluminum to the
hardest.
Round File
used to cut fine amounts
of material from hole of
work piece and also known
as a rat-tail file.
Square file
This type of file used
to file square notches in a
workpiece.
Triangle File
It has a triangular cross section. The
file has three tapered sides, which
are used to file the internal surfaces
of objects with acute angles.

Learning Objective:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:
Bench Vise
Cover your face and body with a apron, goggles and safety gloves.
Always ensure the bench vise is securely fitted to the work table, with
bolts placed in the right order.
Check the clamping of the vise on the surface to see whether it offers
full clamping.
Warnings
Never attempt to widen the jaws of the vise more than they have been
designed for.
Stay away from the handle extension and extra clamping pressure to
ensure you don’t damage your work surface and vise.
Don’t proceed to tighten the vise more than is required. Hand
pressure on a vise is designed to hold until limited lining.
Replace the part or the vise immediately if you notice stress fractures.
Never attempt to weld the vise by self-repairing. It will void your
warranty.

Learning Objective:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:
During filing, it's possible for small chips of material to get stuck in
the teeth of the tool. If left with clogged teeth, the 'pins' in the file can
scratch the material you were trying to smooth, defeating the purpose of
filing in the first place. Therefore all files should be cleaned regularly. File
Card can also be used to clean the clogged file to remove the excess metal.
Using Copper strip is also a great way to remove metal. Don’t apply Oil to
file because it will difficult removing the small chips on the grooves. Apply
Chalk to the File so that the File will not clogged up easily
Steps to be followed:
1. Hold the handle of the brush in your dominant hand.
2. Hold the file in your non-dominant hand or place the file on a flat,
level surface.
3. Run the brush so the teeth push at the angle of the cuts on the file.
4. push the file in the direction that the wires are already bent, so you
will not be bending the wires backwards.
5. Repeat the brushing technique you are using, and run the brush over
the clogged up teeth until the filings and any other material are
removed.
6. Wipe the file repeatedly in any direction to remove the filings you have
loosened.
