Learning styles a. Visual - The visual learner takes mental

pictures of information given, so in order for
this kind of learner to retain information,
oral or written, presentations of new
information must contain diagrams and
drawings, preferably in color. The visual
learner can't concentrate with a lot of activity
around him and will focus better and learn
faster in a quiet study environment.
b. Kinesthetic - described as the students
in the classroom, who have problems sitting
still and who often bounce their legs while
tapping their fingers on the desks. They are
often referred to as hyperactive students
with concentration issues.
c. Auditory- a learner who has the ability
to remember speeches and lectures in detail
but has a hard time with written text. Having
to read long texts is pointless and will not be
retained by the auditory learner unless it is
read aloud.
d. Activist - Learns by having a go
e. Reflector - Learns most from activities
where they can watch, listen and then review
Other needs a.
whatFinancially challenged
has happened.
f. Working
b. Theorist student
- Learns most when ideas are
c. Solotoparent
linked existing theories and concepts.
g. Pragmatist - Learns most from learning

HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY- BASE

LEARNING MATERIALS
Welcome!
The unit of competency, " Perform Bench Work (Complex) , is one
of the competencies of Machining NC II , a course which comprises
the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a M a c h i n i n g
trainee to possess.
The module, Performing Bench Work (Complex), contains the
competencies required to select and use hand and power tools to
perform complex bench work operation
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning
activities in order to complete each learning outcome. In each
learning outcome are Information Sheets, Self-Checks, Task Sheets
and Job Sheets. Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you
have questions, do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your
facilitator.
Remember to:
 Read information sheets and complete theself-checks. Suggested
references are included to supplement the materials provided in
this module.
 Perform the Task Sheets and Job Sheets until you are confident
that your outputs conform to the Performance Criteria
Checklist that follows the sheets.
 Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your
facilitator for evaluation and recording in the Accomplishment
Chart. Outputs shall serve as your portfolio during the
Institutional Competency Evaluation. When you feel confident
that you have had sufficient practice, ask your trainer to evaluate
you. The results of your assessment will be recorded in your
Progress Chart and Accomplishment Chart.
You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this
competency before moving to another competency. A Certificate of
Achievement will be awarded to you after passing the evaluation.
You need to complete this module before you can perform
the module on Turn Workpiece (Intermediate).

Information Sheet 2.2-2

Types of file according to operation

Learning Objective:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

1. Procedure in filing workpiece

Filing is a material removal process in manufacturing. Similar,

depending on use, to both sawing and grinding in effect, it is functionally
versatile, but used mostly for finishing operations. Filing operations can be
used on a wide range of materials as a finishing operation. Filing helps
achieve workpiece function by removing some excess material and deburring
the surface. Sandpaper may be used as a filing tool for other materials, such
as wood.
There are 3 methods of filing:
Straight Forward filing
Moving forward crossing the surface of the workpiece. It can remove
excess material is being removed
Drawing file
The file is pull toward the body with an even pressure
Diagonal/corss filing
The file is move diagonally of the surface of the workpiece

Bench Vise

To state in simple terms, a bench vise is a mechanical apparatus used

to secure an object that is to be worked on. It features two parallel jaws as
part of the design. The device is widely used in the mechanical and
woodworking industries, among others.

Bench vise safety tips

 Cover your face and body with a apron, goggles and safety gloves.

 Always ensure the bench vise is securely fitted to the work table, with
bolts placed in the right order.

DATE DEVELOPED: AUGUST, 2019

MACHINING NC II

PERFORM BENCHWORK(COMPLEX)
ARVIE B. MACUL

 Keep the stationary jaw at a length of slightly beyond the working

table to keep the long pieces away from interfering. In fact, always
have a glance over the work surface and see for yourself whether the
table or the surface holds firm under duress.

 Keep the vise and material size at a substantially compatible range.

 Check the clamping of the vise on the surface to see whether it offers
full clamping.

Warnings

 Never attempt to widen the jaws of the vise more than they have been
designed for.
 Stay away from the handle extension and extra clamping pressure to
ensure you don’t damage your work surface and vise.
 Don’t proceed to tighten the vise more than is required. Hand
pressure on a vise is designed to hold until limited lining.
 Replace the part or the vise immediately if you notice stress fractures.
 Never attempt to weld the vise by self-repairing. It will void your
warranty.

When using File

 Do not use a file as a pry bar, hammer, screwdriver or chisel.
 When using a file or a rasp, grasp the handle in one hand and the toe
of the file in the other.
 Do not hammer on a file.

Information Sheet 2.2-3

Clean and store file

Learning Objective:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

2. Clean and store file

During filing, it's possible for small chips of material to get stuck in
the teeth of the tool. If left with clogged teeth, the 'pins' in the file can
scratch the material you were trying to smooth, defeating the purpose of
filing in the first place. Therefore all files should be cleaned regularly. File
Card can also be used to clean the clogged file to remove the excess metal.
Using Copper strip is also a great way to remove metal. Don’t apply Oil to
file because it will difficult removing the small chips on the grooves. Apply
Chalk to the File so that the File will not clogged up easily

Steps to be followed:
1. Hold the handle of the brush in your dominant hand.
2. Hold the file in your non-dominant hand or place the file on a flat,
level surface.
3. Run the brush so the teeth push at the angle of the cuts on the file.
4. push the file in the direction that the wires are already bent, so you
will not be bending the wires backwards.
5. Repeat the brushing technique you are using, and run the brush over
the clogged up teeth until the filings and any other material are
removed.
6. Wipe the file repeatedly in any direction to remove the filings you have
loosened.
