WORM-GEAR DRIVE

- A worm-gear drive is designated by Z1/Z2/q/m – R 4/40/10/8

Design Procedure

1. From problem statement – power, speed ratio, worm speed, materials, working condition, life, etc.,

2. Estimate the minimum centre distance (a) – (PSG DDB 8.44, eqn. 11.1)

3
𝑍2 540
𝑎 ≥ ( + 1)) √[ ] [𝑀𝑡 ]
𝑞 𝑍2
[𝜎𝑐 ]

3. Determine the minimum axial module (mx) - (PSG DDB 8.44, eqn. 11.3)

3 [𝑀𝑡 ]
𝑚𝑥 ≥ 1.24√
𝑍2 𝑞𝑦𝑣 [𝜎𝑏 ]

4. Standardize the module - (PSG DDB 8.2, Table 1)

5. Calculate diameter factor (q) - (PSG DDB 8.44)

Initially assume 11 and recalculate a

6. Estimate sliding velocity (Vs) - (PSG DDB 8.44, eqn. 11.7) – opt for corresponding design surface (PSG DDB
8.45, Table 32)
𝑣1 𝜋𝑑1 𝑛1
𝑣𝑠 = =
𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛾 60𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛾
7. Calculate the induced surface compressive stress (𝜎𝑐 ) and bending stress (𝜎𝑏 ) - (PSG DDB 8.44, eqn. 11.2
and 11.4)
(𝜎𝑐 ) < [𝜎𝑐 ] and (𝜎𝑏 ) < [𝜎𝑏 ]

8. Determine the length of worm (L) - (PSG DDB 8.48, Table 39)
If worm is ground increase L to L1

9. Decide the number of teeth on worm (Z1)

10. Determine the face width by empirical relationship (b) - (PSG DDB 8.48, Table 38)

11. Compute the parameters of worm and worm-wheel - (PSG DDB 8.43, Table 35)

12. Calculate the efficiency of drive (η) - (PSG DDB 8.49)

𝑡𝑎𝑛𝛾
𝜂=
tan⁡(𝛾 + 𝜌)

13. Calculate for heat generation and removal - (PSG DDB 8.52)
𝐻𝑔 = (1 − 𝜂)𝐼𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡⁡𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟
𝐻𝑑 = ℎ𝑐𝑟 𝐴∆𝑡 = ℎ𝑐𝑟 𝐴(𝑡0 − 𝑡𝑎 )

14. Draw a neat sketch of worm-gear drive
