XCD3 Casing Drill Bit

T ESCO’s XCD3 Casing Drilling Bits are a new generation

of full-face casing bits. Comparable in functionality
and performance to a PDC drill bit, the XCD3 achieves
the same high rates of penetration using casing as the drill
string reducing drill time and ensures that every foot drilled
is a foot cased. A large drift diameter prevents the need
to drill-up hard materials allowing for an efficient drill-
out. A premium casing thread comes standard on
the XCD3, but a blank or weld-prep finish can be
provided, making the XCD3 versatile in any
environment.

The XCD3 is constructed in two separate

components; the main body is
manufactured from a proprietary
drillable alloy with a steel bit sub.
The two parts are connected by a
premium casing thread and are
locked in place using a compound
designed to resist the stresses imposed
during drilling and when the XCD3 itself
is being drilled-out. The cutting structure is
comprised of premium grade PDC face cutters and pre-
flattened PDC gauge cutters mounted on the blades. The
blade height and count are designed to allow fast ROP
and minimize any difficulties during drill-out.

Benefits
Reduce time to drill interval by eliminating time running
casing and mitigating downhole problems with the
industry recognized Plastering Effect.

XCD3 casing bit can be drilled out with a standard PDC

bit eliminating a dedicated drill-out run or use of a special
drill-out bit.

Casing is always at or near bottom ensuring every foot

drilled is a foot kept.

Drill-out with any PDC Bit

Summary
Previously, after cementation, a dedicated milling trip was re-
quired to drill-out the float and casing bit before the next hole
section could be drilled. As the XCD3 casing bit can be drilled
-out with any standard PDC bit, the drill-out and drill ahead
process can be streamlined into a single run.

PDC Drill Out Concept

A 12-¼ inch XCD3 bit was cemented in rock and drilled-out
with a standard 8-½ inch PDC bit. The XCD3’s patent pending
bit body design, made of a proprietary copper based alloy, is
drillable with any standard PDC bit without damaging it’s PDC
cutting structure. The XCD3’s body and cutting structure is
drilled into fine particles allowing easy transportation up the
annulus. This provides the flexibility to choose the optimum
bit for future hole sections.
