DESIGN OF MULTI STOREY RCC BUILDINGS was conducted by The
Institution Of Engineers ( India ) Pune Local Centre from 3 rd Feb. 97 to
18 th April 97. The course got a overwhelming response from the all
sectors.

Need of Course
In the modern Era of Computers, where the scenario of structural / RCC design is
changing very fast, exposure of every Civil engineer to the world of modern computer
softwares is essential.

Course Objectives
The aim of this course was to impart a professional / practical knowledge about RCC
design of multi storey buildings and to have rigorous practical working on computer
softwares.
· At the end of the course, the participants were expected to :-
· Have an overall understanding of the behaviour of structure under various loads and
design concepts
· Understand professional approach of analysis and designing of structures on various
computer softwares.
· Able to design a complete RCC building with seismic analysis on computers.

Participation
There was a participation from practically all fields of Civil engineering such as
Individual professional RCC consultants, Civil contractors , Civil engineers from
various Govt. / Semi Govt. departments such as MES, MIDC, MHADA, Town Planning
, Developers & builders such as Mantri Housing , Kumar Builders etc.

Course Faculty
The course was Co-ordinated by Dr. A. G. Deshpande an eminent Professor of
Structural Engineering and former Head Of Department of Applied Mechanics
Department of MIT Engineering College and Shri. Ravi Ranade - practising RCC/
Structural and Non Destructive Testing Consultant.
The faculty for this course included Practising Consulting Engineers such as Shri. A. M.
Ranade, Shri. Ravi Ranade, Eminent faculty members from various Engineering

Course Inauguration and Felicitation

The course was inaugurated by Shri. Dawalbhact of M/S Tata Consulting Engineers
on 3rd of Feb. 97 and Key note address was given by Dr. N. R. Patwardhan. After
successful completion of the course , the participants were given Certificate. The
felicitation was done by Dr. V. R. Kelkar an eminent Structural Consultant From
Mumbai. Both of these personalities expressed need of such course and
appreciated the course contents.

Course Evaluation and Outcome

At the end of this course , the participants were given questioner and their views
about this course were summarised. About 90 % of the participants expressed that
the contents of this course were excellent, the course was organised most
professionally and they got more confidence in RCC design of building. Some of the
participants expressed that , this course is very useful even for site engineers, as
the basic concepts about structural behaviour, detailing of RCC were made
clear ;even topics such as Foundation behaviour and bearing capacities, earthquake
engineering and Non destructive testing were of interest.

As a outcome of this course a concept of having a full fledged Organisation for

checking RCC design of all buildings was put forward

Future Planning
After successful completion of this course, it is planned to run this course regularly
and a similar Course on “Computer Aided Design of Industrial Steel Structures” is
decided to be conducted in the coming year. This course will cover two projects -
Design of Long span truss shed with Crane girder for wind forces and Design of
Multi staging Industrial building with heavy Vessel / machinery loading at various
floors.
