STAGE 1 _ PRE – APPROVAL OF THE STUDY TOUR

STUDY OBJECTIVES
Settlement Study Tour for Third Year B.Arch students is undertaken with following objectives
prior to commencement of Semester VI within the academic year 2018 – 19.
The specific objectives for the study as laid down in the Savitribai Phule Pune University Syllabus
in the Subject of Design for the Third year:
1. Designing in a different socio geographic context (other than where the Institute is located).
Other Objectives of Settlement Study:
1. To study a location in a different socio – geographic setting than the Institute and document
the study done during in the tour in the form of a report with emphasis on relevant aspects
like climate, social structure, culture, architectural typology, construction technology,
urban fabric, economy, etc or any other issues which need to be considered for envisaging a
design project in totality.
2. To design in the context of the Location studied, with emphasis on all the aspects that
would influence the Design solution.
3. To understand issues at urban level complexities and to provide the students with Design
vocabulary of expression of any Settlement.
4. To understand relevance of collaboration in gathering, making observations and analyzing,
commenting and interpreting of Visual and technical information.
Destinations for Settlement Study were shortlisted on the advice of concerned faculty, by students
of third year as under.
a. Option 1 - Shillong with visit to Mawlynong, Cherrapunji and Guwahati
b. Option 2 – Gangtok with visit to Darjeeling
c. Option 3 – Dharamshala with visit to Anandpur Sahib and Chandigarh
d. Option 4 – Dalhousie with visit to Anandpur Sahib and Chandigarh
All the options were identified for their learning potential in terms of study of terrain, cold climates
and historical, socio-cultural significance. All the options shortlisted have the potential to conduct
theme based settlement studies in forthcoming years. Theme such as ‘Colonial Hill Towns of
India’ or ‘Himalayan Princely Towns’, could be decided as required for further studies.
