REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN (COT 303)

CAT 2 - 35 MARKS

DURATION: 2h30min
Use your own calculator.
Draw a straight horizontal line after each question!

1) Explain briefly 5 advantages of concrete. /5marks

2) The restrained slab panel is shown in Figure 1 below. Its effective span in
each direction is 4.5 m and 4.2 m. The slab supports the f inishes and felting
of 2.20 kN/m2, and the live load of 1.5 kN/m2. Given fcu = 30 N/mm2, fy = 250
N/mm2. The slab thickness is assumed to be 150 mm. Design the required
reinforcement, and check for deflection (critical at mid-span). /8marks

Note: Make sound judgment on each parameter assumed, as a civil engineer.

3) Define 10 parts of a stair /5marks

4) The number of treads in a flight is equal to: /2marks

a. Risers in the flight c. Risers minus one
b. Risers plus one d. None of these

5) Given data:
Coefficient due end column constraints
i.Braced column β=0.75
ii.Unbraced column β=1.2
The clear distance between end restraints lo=4750 mm
Column section and elevation

Questions:
i) Calculate effective height of column AB (ley= lex) /1mark
ii) Calculate slenderness ratio of column AB (consider braced and unbraced column)
/2marks
iii) According to the values calculated in b, is the column (consider braced and
unbraced column) short or slender? /2marks

6) A rectangular column with b=300mm and h=400mm,

is subjected to an ultimate axial load of 230 kN and
an ultimate moment of 240 kNm. Determine the
reinforcement required using the design chart. Show
the provided reinforcement (main longitudinal bars
and link) in the section and check its satisfactory
requirements according to code of practice. The
concrete is grade 30 (fcu=30N/mm2) and the
reinforcement is grade 460 (fy =460 N/mm2).
Assume 25 mm diameter bars for the main
reinforcement and 8 mm diameter links. The cover
to the links is 40 mm. /6marks
