National Institute of Technology Silchar
National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) is one of
the 30 National Institutes of Technology of India and was
established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College in Assam.
In 2002 it was upgraded to the status of National Institute of
Technology and was declared as Institute of National Importance
under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
About Silchar
Silchar is the 2nd largest city of Assam located southern part of the
state, northeastern India. It is situated on the Barak River near the
Bangladesh border.
Under the Kachari rulers, Silchar was a village. During British
rule, the city was the headquarters of Cachar (1832). The name
originated from two words: shil (“rocks”) and char (“fields”).
Present-day Silchar is a trade and processing centre for tea, rice,
and other agricultural products. There is limited industry,
principally papermaking and tea-box manufacturing. The city is
the site of Assam University. It has an airport and lies on both rail
line and highway connecting Aizawl in Mizoram state with
Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya.
How to reach Silchar
Silchar is well-connected to the major cities like Guwahati and
Kolkata through roadways, railways and airways. Many flights
leave for Silchar Airport from Guwahati and Kolkata. Guwahati
Railway Station is directly connected to Silchar railway station. A
good system of roadways connects Silchar to various cities of
Assam. A national highway links Silchar with Guwahati directly.
By Flight:
Flights from Guwahati to Silchar are available on a regular basis.
Air India provides the direct service from Kolkata to Silchar.
Spicejet and Indigo provides direct service from Delhi to Silchar
via Guwahati. Silchar Airport is around 26 km away from the city
centre, and affordable taxi service is available on sharing basis
around INR 200 from the airport to NIT Campus.
By Train:
Silchar has its own railway station located in the Tarapur area, but
it has only metre gauge currently. It is connected with most of the
important places of North-East including Guwahati, Lunding,
Agartala, etc. However, if you have to come via train from other
parts of the country like Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata, you have to
take a train first to Guwahati or till Dibrugarh and then take a train
to Silchar. Among the important trains in the north-east are the
Railway Station is Badarpur Railway Station, located at a distance
of 32 km from Silchar. It is very well connected to many major
cities like Dimapur and Guwahati. The railway link from Silchar
to Lumding is one of the most picturesque railway routes in India.
By Road:
Silchar is well connected with various cities through road. A 326
