Torque Converter

The torque converter (2) connects the engine (1) to the transmission (3). This connection between the
engine and the transmission is a hydraulic connection. There is no direct connection between the
engine and the transmission. The torque converter transfers mechanical energy from the engine to the
transmission.

The oil filter (4) is mounted on the frame on the left side of the machine. The externally mounted oil
filter has a bypass valve. If there is a restriction in the oil filter or if the viscosity of the oil is very
high, the bypass valve in the filter housing will open.
If the inlet pressure to the oil filter becomes excessive, the bypass valve will open. When the oil does
not go through the filter element, the debris in the oil can cause damage to other components in the
hydraulic system.
Correct maintenance procedures must be followed in order to make sure that the element does not
become full of debris. Debris could stop the flow of oil to the hydraulic system.

There are six clutches that are used to transfer power from input shaft assembly (7) to output shaft
assembly (12) .

In order for the power to be transferred through the transmission to the output shaft assembly (12),
one direction clutch must be engaged and one gear clutch must be engaged. Each clutch is controlled
by a modulating valve. The machine ECM controls the proper engagement of the clutches by sending
a variable signal to the solenoids on the modulating valves.
Clutch 2 (9) and clutch 1 (8) are located on shaft assembly (10). Clutch 3 (16) and clutch 4 (11) are
located on shaft assembly (17). Clutch 6 (13) and the clutch 5 (14) are located on shaft assembly
(15) .

The test port for the modulating valve for clutch 2 (18) is located on the modulating valve for clutch
2. The test port for the modulating valve for clutch 1 (19) is located on the modulating valve for
clutch 1. The test port for the modulating valve for clutch 3 (20) is located on the modulating valve
for clutch 3. The test port for the modulating valve for clutch 4 (21) is located on the modulating
valve for clutch 4. The test port for the modulating valve for the clutch 5 (22) is located on the
modulating valve for the clutch 5. The test port for the modulating valve for clutch 6 (23) is located
on the modulating valve for clutch 6.

The test port for the torque converter inlet oil pressure (24) is located on the main relief valve.
The test port for the transmission pump pressure (34) is located on the main relief valve.

The test port for the torque converter outlet pressure is located on the top of the transmission. The test
port for the torque converter outlet pressure is above the torque converter temperature sensor.

The transmission pump (26) is bolted to the transmission cover (28). The transmission pump is driven
by the torque converter. The hydraulic oil pump (27) is mounted to the back of the transmission
pump.

The torque converter inlet relief valve is located in the torque converter housing under the
transmission control valve. The torque converter inlet relief valve (31) controls the pressure that is
sent to the torque converter from the main relief valve in order to protect the torque converter.

The torque converter outlet relief valve is located at the top of the torque converter housing. The
torque converter outlet relief valve (32) controls the pressure that is sent to the oil cooler from the
torque converter in the case of an obstruction in the oil cooler.
