Electronic Control Module (Machine)

SMCS - 7610-MCH

Illustration 1 g00554751

Electronic Control Module (ECM)

The machine ECM makes decisions based on the information from inputs and information from
memory. The machine ECM controls many functions on the machine:

• The power train is electronically controlled by the machine ECM. This is the reason that the
machine ECM can be referred to as the power train ECM.

• Various machine functions are controlled by the machine ECM.

• Some functions that are related to the engine are controlled by the machine ECM. The engine
has an ECM that controls most of the engine functions.

After the ECM receives the information from inputs and information from memory, the machine
ECM will send a corresponding response through the outputs. The inputs and outputs of the machine
ECM connect to the machine harness by two 70-pin connectors (J1 and J2).

Inputs
The machine has several input devices. The machine ECM receives information from components
about machine operations. The machine has switch-type inputs and sensor-type inputs. Switches
provide signals to the switch inputs of the ECM. The possible outputs of a switch are listed: an open
signal, a grounded signal and + battery signal. Sensors provide a signal to the ECM that constantly
changes. The inputs to the machine ECM are listed in the two tables for the 70-pin connector.

Outputs
The machine ECM sends electrical signals through the outputs. The outputs can create an action or
the outputs can provide information to the machine ECM. The outputs for the machine ECM are listed
in the two tables that are for the 70-pin connectors.

Input/Output
The engine ECM and the machine ECM use the CAT data link in order to communicate with each
other. The data link is bidirectional. The data link allows the ECM to receive information. The data
link allows the ECM to send information. The data link allows the sharing of information with other
electronic control modules.

The machine ECM and the instrument panel use the CAN data link to communicate with each other.
The data link is bidirectional. The data link allows the ECM to receive information. The data link
allows the ECM to send information. Engine information that needs to be displayed on the instrument
panel is transmitted to the machine ECM on the CAT data link. Then, the machine ECM sends the
information to the instrument panel on the CAN data link.

For more information on the data links, see Systems Operation, "Data Link".

A module identifier (MID) is assigned to each ECM. The MID for the machine ECM is the number
081.
