ALLEGRO APPASSIONATO
Op. 43
Camille Saint-Saéns
In an arrangement
for 5 Cellos,
or Cello Soloist with Celilo Orchestra
(dedicated to Igor Saenz Abarzuza)
Prepared by
DAVID JOHNSTONE
CELLO _I (Soloist)Note:
It should be mentioned that “Allegro Appassionato” is well-
known as a concert piece for cello soloist, usually heard with
piano but sometimes with orchestra, Saint-Saens himself made
the orchestration to this; indeed only the short duration of the
work - under 5 mins - has somewhat limited the number of
orchestral performances.
What I have done is to ‘re-orchestrate’ it for cello orchestra or
for five solo cellists. When played as a cello quintet it will sound
as an intense chamber music work, with the obvious cello
soloist lines from Cello I. It hardly needs to be pointed out, lam
sure, but in the case of a rendition with Cello Orchestra - much
to be encouraged - then obviously Celio 1 should be played by
one solo cellist and the other parts (Cellos II to V) to be divided
up more-or-less equally amongst all the ‘orchestral’ cellists!
This arrangement is dedicated to my colleague Igor Saenz
Abarzuza, Navarre cellist and teacher, who has always been
supportive of my mad cello arranging projects!ALLEGRO APPASSIONATO ..... SAINT-SAENS
