DESIGN OF ULTRA‐FAST RECONFIGURABLE PHASE SHIFTERS FOR ANTENNA ARRAYS
Host Laboratory

Industrial partner

Project context
This study take parts in a more important 3‐year project named DRUIDE (Déphaseurs
Reconfigurables Ultra RapIDEs) which is founded by DGA (as part of Rapid program) and
that brings together interdisciplinary academic (Lab‐STICC, C2N) and industrial partners (TE‐
OX).
In its whole, DRUIDE is devoted to ultra‐fast reconfigurable antenna systems in order to meet
a strong demand from military and civilian operators. The main goals consist first in designing
digital, analog and hybrid phase shifters for broadband application to validate key
manufacturing technology steps and then to optimize the phase shifter performances for three
operating bands (225‐400 MHz, 28‐35 GHz and 94 GHz) according to the intended
applications.
Digital phase shifter reconfigurability will be implemented by using ultra‐fast switches based
on thin VO2 films, i.e. a Metal–Insulator phase Transition (MIT) material, which can be
electrically (nanosecond) or optically (sub‐nanosecond) controlled. On the other hand, analog
phase shifter implementation will rely on tunable capacitors made of HfZrO2 to continuously
control the 0 to 360° phase shift variation and to be used in mixed analog‐digital phase shifter
architecture.
Work description
1‐ Study/Design/Implementation of a generic topology of 4/6‐bit digital broadband phase
shifter.
2‐ Study/Design/Implementation of analog or hybrid analog‐digital phase shifter topology.
Location and supervision
The fellowship will be mainly hosted at the Lab‐STICC, Brest, in the framework of a French
national project in collaboration with TE‐OX, France.
Candidate profile
The candidate must hold a Ph.D. or an equivalent title, with excellent skills in antenna and/or
passive microwave device design, and proficiency in the use of electromagnetic and RF circuit
simulation software solutions, ideally with a previous experience in antenna and phase shifter
implementation. A good level of spoken and written English is also required.
Application
Interested candidate should send a detailed CV, motivation and reference letters by email to
Prof. Gérard TANNE, Professor, Lab‐STICC, Université de Brest (gerard.tanne@univ‐brest.fr)
and Guy GARRY, TE‐OX, Orsay (guy.garry@te‐ox.com).
Deadline to apply: as soon as possible.
Contract: Duration 12 months (potentially renewable).
