Analogical Method

o Analogies are found mostly in the writings of the prophets, and also the Psalms.
o It was used by the Apostle James (3.1-5) and Augustine.
o Webster dictionary defines it as a comparison of two otherwise unlike things based on
resemblance of a particular aspect. In other words, it is comparison based on few
resemblances.
o How is it different from simile and allegory? A simile is comparison based on close-likeness.
o What does it mean that two things are closely alike? With simile, two things that resembles
each other does not mean you can associate one with another; there may be some
association allowed.
o However, with allegory, two things may be more closely alike.
o This method is best used in bringing out similarities in character or attitude—substance.
