ACADEMIC AND OTHER ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2017-2018

I. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

i. ADMISSIONS

1. UG COURSE (B.Tech):

A total of 456 students were admitted to various engineering branches of the College
through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC). 88 students (20* in Civil, 16* in EEE,
15* in Mechanical, 12 each in CSE and ECE, 7 in EIE, 3 each in IT and Chemical Engineering)
were admitted under the Lateral Entry Scheme based on their performance in the Diploma
Examinations.

* First year vacancies were filled by LE after effecting Branch change.

2. PG COURSES:

Out of the total number of 285 seats, 165 students were admitted in which 24 each in
M.Tech-Structural Engineering, M.Tech-ECE and M.Tech (Distributed Computing Systems),
16 each in M.Tech-Environmental Engineering and M.Tech-Information Security, 13 in M.Tech-
Product Design Manufacturing, 7 each in M.Tech-Wireless Communication and M.Tech-EEE in
Electrical Drives and Controls, 5 in M.Tech-Information Technology, 4 in M.Tech-Energy
Technology, 25 in MCA.

Out of the total PG students admitted, 2 were GATE qualified candidates, while the
remaining were selected on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Examination in the
respective PG programmes conducted by the Institute.

Out of a total number of 456 students admitted to the Pondicherry Engineering College
in 2016-2017 to B.Tech programmes, 280 are boys and 176 are girls.

Out of a total number of 165 students admitted to PEC in PG Programmes, 80 are boys
and 85 are girls.

ii. STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN UG PROGRAMMES

The following is a brief summary of the examination results of students of Pondicherry


Engineering College, based on examinations conducted in April/May 2017.

The overall pass percentage of final year B.Tech students was 68%.
The overall pass percentage of 3rd year B.Tech students was 56%.
The overall pass percentage of 2nd year B.Tech students was 51.5%.
The overall pas percentage of 1st year B.Tech students was 50.44%

iii. STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN PG PROGRAMMES

100% pass was registered in PG Programmes viz. M.Tech (Distributed Computing


System), M.Tech (Information Technology) and M.Tech (Instrumentation Engineering), 87% in
M.Tech (Information Security) 84% in M.Tech (Electronics and Communication Engineering),
80% in M.Tech (Environmental Engineering), 75% in M.Tech (Energy Technology), 74% in
M.Tech (Product Design Manufacturing), 59% in M.Tech (Structural Engineering), 55% in MCA
53% in M.Tech (Wireless Communication) 42% in M.Tech (Electrical Drives and Controls)

iv. SCHOLARSHIP

230 students of the College have been obtaining various Scholarships as detailed below

During the year, our students travelled far and wide to bring laurels to this institution.

IV. INTRA-MURAL SPORTS

The Intra-mural Games and Sports for Sports Day were organized from 22.02.2018
to 29.03.2018 in our Campus for the year 2017-18 and nearly 354 prizes will be
distributed today.

MEN:

Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Handball, Kabaddi, Cricket, Badminton, Chess,


Carrom, Table Tennis and Athletics.

WOMEN:

Throwball, Chess, Badminton, Carrom, Table Tennis and Athletics.

TEACHING & NON-TEACHING:

Events like 100m, Shotput, Discus and tug-of-war were conducted.

This college proudly stands out as an Institution in which 75% of the students
participated in various games and sports right from Intra-mural to National level. It is stated
that the performance report really indicates the year 2017-18 has been a year of remarkable
activities.

The Graduation Day was held on 7th April 2017. Thiru.V. Narayanasamy, Hon’ ble Chief
Minister of Puducherry was the Chief Guest. Dr.G.Raja Singh Thangadurai, Scientist ‘G’, Project
Director, PJ-10(DAV) & Dy. Programme Director, BRAHMOS, DRDL, Hyderabad was the Guest of
Honour and delivered the Graduation Day address.

College Day was held on 13th April 2017. Professor Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, School of
Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and he
distributed awards to the meritorious students. The Principal presented the College Report for
the academic year 2016-17.

71st Independence Day celebration: The national flag was hoisted by
Dr.S. Subramanian, Principal i/c and the Dean (Admn) and he delivered Independence Day
speech to the staff gathered in the PEC campus on Tuesday, the 15th August, 2017.

PECOFES 17 – An All India Inter Collegiate Culture Festival was held on 26th September
2017 to 28th September 2017. Janangalin Kalaignan Padma Shri.Vivek (Tamil Cine Actor),
Founder of Green Kalam was the Chief Guest and tree plantation was done.

The Principal hoisted national flag in the presence of faculty, staff and students on the
occasion of PUDUCHERRY LIBERATION DAY on 1st November, 2017 in front of the
Administrative Block.

B.TECH INAUGURATION

The 33rd batch of B.Tech. course was inaugurated on 23rd August 2017.
Dr.P.Dananjayan, Principal presided over the inaugural ceremony and delivered presidential
address. Dr. K. Vivekanandan, Professor and Dean (Students) delivered welcome address. A
large number of freshers’ attended the programme with their parents. The Deans and the
Heads of the Departments joined the Principal in extending a warm welcome to the engineers
of 2021.

The Sports Day of the College was held on 29th March 2018. Dr.V.J.Chandran, IPS,
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Puducherry was the Chief Guest and he distributed prizes
to the winners.

III TRAINING & PLACEMENT

In the academic year 2017-2018, 352 PG & UG students were registered for placement.
Amongst the registered, 201 students of various branches were placed in the leading
companies such as TCS, Amazon, Cadence, Renault Nisan, MRF, L&T (Infotech), Zoho, Aricent,
Orange Telecommunications, Mbit, etc.

Training Programs

 Training and Placement Cell conducted two Zero credit courses (General
Communication and General Aptitude) for pre-final year UG students.
 Placement Tests were conducted to the PG & UG students.
 Six days / Five days Aptitude training for current pre-final year UG students by Focus
Academy & Smart was conducted.

 Six days Personality Development Program for pre final year PG & UG students by EDC
Global was conducted.
 Aptitude & Communication test was conducted by Training & Placement Cell to the
present pre-final year students
 Aptitude & Communication test was conducted by Training & Placement Cell to the
present second year UG students
 Three days placement orientation program to second year UG students was organized
(Funded by TEQIP)
 Highest Package is Rs.27 Lakhs Per Annum by Amazon.

CONTRIBUTIONS BY THE FACULTY MEMBERS

Dr.R.Saravanane, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering has been selected as an


Indian Expert involved in the evaluation of research and innovation project submitted
under European Research funding Programme.(SC5-12 from call H2020-SC5-2018-1
European Union – India Cooperation). He will be participating in the evaluation process
to be held in Brussels, Belgium by 2nd week of April, 2018. It is a great honour for
Dr.Saravanane, to the College and to the Department on his contribution as expert
member in this programme.

Dr.V.Govindasamy, Asst. Professor, Department of Information Technology has been


nominated as State Nodal Officer for Elections Department, Government of Puducherry
with effect from 14.09.2017. He was also nominated as State Level Master Trainer for
Electoral Literacy Club in respect of U.T. of Puducherry, Elections Department,
Puducherry with effect from 09.03.2018. He effectively organized Multiple Electoral
Awareness Activities including Bike Voters Awareness Rally, Mobile App Update and
workshops on several of Puducherry and Karaikal Elections Department.

V. FINANCE

A. GRANT-IN-AID

Rs.49,08,48,000/- (Rupees 49 Crores 8 Lakhs 48 Thousand only) has been released to


the College as Grant-in-aid under Plan for the financial year April 2017 to March 2018.

Rs.16,00,000/- (Rupees 16 Lakhs only) has been released by UGC as financial assistance
to Autonomous Colleges.

B. REVENUE GENERATED

i. TUITION FEE

A sum of Rs.1.08 crores (from other state UG students and all PG students) has been
collected as tuition fees and Rs.3.43 crores as other fees from UG students from April 2017 to
March 2018.

The Department of Civil Engineering has generated Rs.40.38 lakhs as revenue towards

VIII LIBRARY

The total number of books in the Library is 56,553. The Library subscribes to 593
e-journals, 170 National journals and Foreign Journals. It also operates a Book Bank with over
2972 text books. The number of books added to Library this year is 208. The number of titles
available is 31,259. The total value of books available in the Library is Rs.2.49 crores.

INDIAN NATIONAL DIGITAL LIBRARY IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (INDEST)

The INDEST – AICTE Consortium provides free access to unlimited e-books,


120 e-journals. Access is also provided to 96 IEEE Transactions, 18 ASCE Journals, 6 ASME
journals, Science Direct and Springer ling e-journals.

IX. DISPENSARY

The Women Cell of PEC in association with Jothi Eye Care organized Eye Check up camp
for all female staff members and girl students on 12.10.2017.

NSS of PEC in association with JIPMER conducted Blood Donation camp on 26.10.2017.

NSS of PEC in association with Red Ribbon Club, Puducherry conducted blood donation
camp on 31.01.2018.

TCS Best Project Award Ceremony: Inauguration of Students' Council of CSE


Department (the Hub) and TCS Best Project Award ceremony was held on 3rd August 2017.

The Dept. of Physics organized an invited lecture in the field of “Astrophysics” on Friday,
the 7th July 2017. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Surajit Paul, Assistant Professor, Dept. of
Physics, Saavitribai Pune University, Pune on the topic of “Formation and evolution of large
scale structures in the Universe”. The speaker Dr. Paul elaborated about the universe and its
structure. He explained about modelling structure of our universe.

 Formal Inauguration and Launch of Pradhan Mantri Yuva Udyamita Vikas Abhiyan (PM-
YUVA) scheme for Pondicherry Engineering College by Govt of Puducherry, was held on
27-03-2018. Prizes were distributed to the State Level Student Competitions on
Innovative Ideas.

 Presentation of Project Proposal for NATIONAL INITIATIVE FOR DEVELOPING AND


HARNESSING INNOVATIONS (NIDHI)-Technology Business Incubator (TBI) supported by
Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India at Hyderabad was held on
15th February 2018.

 A Workshop was organized by EDC, Government of Puducherry and CII on "Demystifying


Intellectual Property Rights For Innovators & Entrepreneurs" was held on 14-02-2018.

 MoU With National Entrepreneurship Network - Meeting with Principal, Deans, HODs
and members of IEDC with officials from National Entrepreneurship Network for
mainstreaming Entrepreneurship Education in Pondicherry Engineering College with the
support of NEN was held on January 22, 2018.

 Short listing of Student Interns by Personal Interview, Group Discussion and project
designing was held on 19th and 20th January 2018. Around 24 Interns were selected for
Internship offered by M/S Bytes and Bots Inc. USA.

 Orientation program was held on 18th January 2018 on “Innovation and


Entrepreneurship development” by Shri.Kumar Ramajayam CEO and President,

 Inauguration of Innovation Café was held on 27th November 2017, An initiative to


promote Entrepreneurship within the campus, Entrepreneurship Development Cell ,
Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Puducherry.

 Completion of Phase-I of Entrepreneurship Training for students was held on 3rd


November 2017 at Pondicherry Engineering College (module 1000 and 1001) on
foundational aspects of Entrepreneurship.

 A Proposal was submitted on 30th September 2017 for Atal Incubation Centre to NITI
Aayog, Government of India, to set up Atal Incubation Centre in Pondicherry
Engineering College for a period of 5 years.

 "We hatch Ideas", Entrepreneurship promotional Event was held on 15th September
2017 in Pondicherry Engineering College in association with Entrepreneurship
Development Cell , Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of
Puducherry.

 One Week "Faculty Educator Program" for Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana (PM-YUVA
Yojana , organized in Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute of Tamil
Nadu, SIDCO Industrial Estate Guindy, Chennai - 600 032 from 11-09-2017 to
15-09-2017.

C. LITERARY CLUB

The first meeting of Computers and multimedia club for the academic year 2017-18 for
the election of office bearers of the club held on 14th September 2017.

E. COUNSELLING AND CAREER GUIDANCE CELL (CCGC)

The Career Guidance and Counseling Cell of PEC has organized a talk on "How to pursue
higher studies in the US?" on 12.07.2017. The Principal, PEC had opened the session by

motivating the students to pursue higher studies. Subsequently, Ms. Santhi Mohan, Consultant
Education USA, Chennai delivered the talk.

In addition to the regular Counselling activities, CCGC organized a Special Lecture for all
the First Year B.Tech students from 26.02.2018 to 01.03.2018. A lecture on “Coping with
Adolescence” has been delivered by Dr.Nancy Premkumar, JIPMER.

F. GENDER CHAMPIONS CLUB (GCC)

A Lecture on “Gender Equality: Dignity in Equality” by Mr.Peter Premkumar and Ms.Sally


Premkumar was arranged by Dr.K.Elanseralathan, Professor and Dr.R.Rajathy, Associate
Professor, Department of EEE. The lecture was arranged for 3rd year EEE students on 8th
January 2018, 2nd year EEE students on 23rd February 2018 and 24th February 2018 for final year
EEE students.

G. IPR CELL:

The IPR & Patenting cell conducted a special Lecture on the topic "Filing Procedure of
Patents in India" by Mr. T.V.Madhusudhan, Deputy Controller of Patents & Design, Patent
Office, Chennai. The special lecture was arranged to create awareness among faculty and
research scholars on the importance of Intellectual Property rights and procedure to file
Patents in India on 21st July 2017 at 10.30 a.m in the Centre for Continuing Education
Seminar Hall. Faculty members, research Scholars and M.Tech students attended this special
lecture.

A draft IPR policy document taking inputs from the IP policies of two renowned national
level technical institutes IIT Bombay (IITB) and Anna University, Chennai was formulated to
nurture the IP culture, and enable the inventors of PEC to generate and protect their research
inventions. The draft IPR policy and Operating Guidelines have been submitted to Education
Secretary for approval.

Two Patents have been awarded to Dr.R.Saravanan, Professor of Civil Engineering in


the area of Environmental Engineering.

H. IQAC CELL

 Revised Self Appraisal forms were circulated amongst faculty and non-teaching
staff and collected in July-August 2017.
 A website for IQAC was launched in the PEC website, in which the goals and
objectives of IQAC, members and Forms and Reports of IQAC cell are hosted.
 As per UGC guidelines, external expert members were included in the IQAC cell
of PEC. The members list is available in IQAC website.
 The first meeting of the Working Committee members of IQAC, PEC was
conducted on 03.01.2018 and several aspects of quality such as Curriculum,
Teaching, Learning & Evaluation, Research, Consultancy and Extension activities
Student support & Progress, Infrastructure & learning resources, , Governance &
Management were discussed.
 The first meeting of the IQAC Committee members with external experts was
conducted on 09.01.2018 and the discussions and suggestions given by the
Working Committee members were taken forward for discussion. Measures to
be taken for quality enhancement of PEC were discussed and an action plan is to
be formulated for the year 2018.

I. RASHTRIYA UCHCHATAR SHIKSHA ABHIYAN (RUSA)

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under the


Centrally Sponsored Scheme “RASHTRIYA UCHCHATAR SHIKSHA ABHIYAN (RUSA)” has
approved for the Upgradation of the Pondicherry Engineering College to a Technical University
and to incorporate it as an affiliating, teaching and research University at Puducherry to
facilitate and promote studies, research, technology incubation, product innovation and
extension work in Technology, Management and Science and also to achieve excellence in
higher and technical education and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
Whereas the Pondicherry Engineering College is an institution of the Engineering College
(Pondicherry) Society, a Government of Puducherry Undertaking, affiliated to Pondicherry
University.

And whereas, it is expedient to confer on the said institution the status of a University
to enable it to function more efficiently, as an affiliating, teaching and research centre in
various branches of learning and courses of study in promoting advancement and
dissemination of knowledge and learning, and to meet the requirement of higher education
and research in the field of Engineering and Technology, Advanced Sciences and Management
Studies, foster Industry relevant Research and innovation and to avail better scopes and
opportunities to serve the Society and the Nation.

 Blood Donation Camp at College Dispensary to Indira Gandhi Government Hospital on


31.01.2018.

 Inter College Competition to create Awareness on HIV AIDS was on 01.02.2018. 152
students from 17 Colleges have participated. Essay Writing, Tamil Elocution (both
English and Tamil) and Quiz where conducted.

K. HEALTH HYGINE AND ENVIRONMENT CLUB (H2EC) - FORMERLY YOGA CLUB

The Inauguration of Health, Hygiene & Environment Club (H2EC) activities for the
academic year 2017-18 was held on 28.08.2017 Prof. S. MURUGAIYAN, President, World
Community Service Centre (WCSC), Puducherry zone inaugurated the club and delivered
keynote address on "Yoga and Empowerment". Dr. P. DANANJAYAN, the Principal presided over
the function. Dr. M. EZHILARASAN, Convenor, H2EC welcomed the gathering. More than 100
students from various branches of UG, PG and Research Scholars have attended the function
along with their respective Department Faculty Coordinators.

A 3rd International Yoga Day Celebration was conducted in association with World
Community Service Centre (WCSC), Puducherry on 21st June 2017. More than 100 members
from faculty, staff and students have participated and demonstrated Yoga on this day.

A six month “Yoga for Youth Empowerment (YYE)” Yoga and Meditation foundation
course was started on 28.08.2017 for the UG, PG and Research scholars (222 students) of PEC
organized by H2EC club along with World Community Service Centre, Puducherry. The
inauguralfunction was conducted on 28.08.2017. Sixteen classes were conducted from
28.08.2017 to26.03.2018. The valedictory and certificate distribution function was held on
26.03.2018.

N. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES

The activities of PECAA are:

 Fourth Silver Jubilee Reunion for 1992 passed out batch was organized on 3rd
July 2017.
 Twentieth Year Reunion for 1997 passed out batch was organized on 29th July
2017.
 An invited talk on Road Safety and Awareness was organized on 5th December
2017.
 In association with Le Banyan de PEC, Four barricades was deployed in front of
the College on 5th December 2017.
 Dustbins worth Rs. 27000/- sponsored by 1997 Alumnus, were deployed in the
administrative block on 24th February 2018.
 Alumni Induction day to be conducted in April 2018.
 Alumni lectures were organized.

 Student Scholarships: M/s. Aspire Systems Pvt. Ltd. in association with the PEC
Alumni Batch of 1992 sponsored full fee reimbursement for poor and
meritorious students of PEC. Dr. P. Dananjayan, the Principal distributed cheques
of value Rs. 13,620/- each to the six students who have been selected by the PEC
Alumni Association based on their academic performance and family income.
Dhilip and Anandhakrishnan of B.Tech. ME, Chauvelin Marie Delcasse and
Subash of B.Tech. IT, Balamurugan of CE and Aswini of CSE received the cheques
from the Principal.

O. WOMEN’S CELL

1. Women's Cell, PEC in association with Jothi Eye Care Center, Puducherry
organised a one day Eye screening camp on 12.10.2017 from 9.00am to 4.00 pm
at Dispensary, PEC under RUSA grant. Dr. Vanaja Vaithiayanadhan Managing
Director, Jothi Eye Care Centre, Principa(i/c) Dr. S. Subramanian and
Dean(Students) Dr. K. Vivekanandan inagurated and felicitated the gathering. The
arrangements were made by Dr.Kavitha Kumar and the members of women's cell.
The vision test was performed by ophthalmic assistants. Eye screening tests and
diagnosis were performed for 402 students and women staff members.

2. An National Commission for Women (NCW) sponsored Seminar on Women’s


Legal Rights and Empowerment was held on 23rd October 2017. Dr. K.Latchoumy,
Director-cum-Law Officer, Women’s Commission, Puducherry delivered a detailed
presentation on the seminar. She discussed various articles, laws and acts related
to Women’s Legal rights. Many Students and staff of various departments and
sections of Pondicherry Engineering College participated in the seminar. The
Principal Prof. P. Danajayan, Prof. Dr. S. Subramanian, Dean (Admin) and
Dr. V. Vivekanandan, Dean(Students) addressed the gathering.

3. A competition based on the above-mentioned seminar was held on


25th October 2017 and 53 students, both from the Undergraduate and Post-
Graduate courses actively participated. S.Gomathi of Second year B.Tech (EEE)
won the first prize (Cash prize of Rs. 2,000/-). V. Buela Jenifer of Second year
B.Tech (Chem) won the second prize (Cash prize of Rs. 1,500/-) S.Vignesh of First
year B.Tech (ECE), Anishya Premi of Second year B.Tech (Chem), Raman Kishore of
First year B.Tech (ECE), Aishwarya.S.K. of First year B.Tech (Chem) and Pavithra.S.
of Final Year B.Tech (EEE) won the third prize. (Cash prize of Rs. 1,000/-). Yasmin,
Second year B.Tech (Chem) and Janani. M, Second year B.Tech (Chem) won the
consolation prizes. The seminar and the competition was coordinated by
Dr.S.Kanmani, (Advisor, Women’s Cell), Dr.R.Kalpana (Convenor, Women’s Cell),
Dr.K.Guejalatchoumy and Dr.R.Rajathy with the support of the members of the
Women’s Cell.

4. WALKATHON 2018

On 12th February 2018, Women’s cell and NSS in association with INDIA TURNS
PINK organised a mega Walkathon for the girl students and women staff
members. Also a social session on breast cancer awareness was organised. The
principal inaugurated the Walkathon. 59 staff members and 405 students are
participated. In the staff category, Mrs.E. Valli, Principal Office won the first
place, Dr.P.Revathy, Asst. Professor, Civil Dept won the second place and
Manonmani, sweeper, ECE dept. won the third place. In the students category,
Hari Pritta.G, B.Tech(Civil)-I yr won the first, P.Bakyalakshmi, B.Tech(ECE)-III yr
won the second and S.Vijayalakshmi B.Tech(EEE)-II yr and E. Pazhaniamma,
B.Tech(Civil)-III yr won the third place.

5. Programme on Women Leadership

The Women Cell of Pondicherry Engineering College, has organised a special


Programme to commemorate the International women’s Day on 9th March,
2018. Our Proud Alumnus Mrs. Jayabharathy Jayaraman, IRS, Deputy
Commissioner of Central Excise & GST, Puducherry Divison III presided over the
function and a gave a talk on “ Women Leadership”. In her address, she advised
women to develop their excellence towards leadership quality. She also
emphasised the younger generation to equip themselves in all ways to face the
challenges as a woman in the day to day life and to enrich their knowledge in all
aspects of life.

6. Seminar cum Competitions on Women’s Day 2018


The Women Cell of Pondicherry Engineering College, has organised a Seminar
cum Competitions to celebrate the International women’s Day on March 13, 2018
under the sponsorship of TEQIP III. The Special Invitee Mrs. Saruladha
Krishnamoorthy, Associate Professor, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering
addressed the students on “ Women Role in Technical Education” . In her speech,
she advised the students to balance between their career and family and also to
make their passion towards learning, till they achieve their dreams. She also
emphasized the students to empower themselves by all means and enhance their
strength in terms of social and economic status. Mrs. Padmasini,
Superintendent(Estt) was honoured by the Women Cell members. Following this,
various Competitions (viz. Glass Pot Painting, Art from waste, Cooking without
fire, Mehandi design, Hairstyle & Nail Polish contest, Selfie Contest) were
conducted for the girl students and the winners were awarded cash prizes.

Women Cell Convenor, Dr. R. Kalpana proposed the vote of thanks. The Program
was meticulously arranged by all members of Women Cell, PEC.

XII GENERAL

A. QEEE - PEC ON MHRD’S NATIONAL ACADEMIC GRID

PEC is the only college in this region to participate in Quality Enhancement in


Engineering Education (QEEE), an interactive and virtual classroom piloted by IIT Madras since
2014. About 150 TEQIP and Non-TEQIP institutions in different parts of the nation subscribe to
the live class teaching by eminent professors of IITs.

PEC has been consistently having patronage with IIT Madras, Chennai in extending the
QEEE live classes since its inception in 2014.

650 students belonging to the departments of EEE, CSE, CE, ECE and EEE participated in
live classes on 10 different topics conducted during August-November 2017 session.

This semester in phase 9 of QEEE, about 500 students participate in 8 different topics on
live classes.

Students securing more than 50 % in all attempts of their Quizzes and assignments are
entitled to get Certificate of Excellence and others get Certificate of Participation.

B. NPTEL – (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning)


NPTEL – (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) local chapter was
established in Pondicherry Engineering College on 23rd November 2015 which was another
milestone in the history of Pondicherry Engineering College. NPTEL has a largest repository of
courses in Engineering, Science and Humanities from India’s best institutes.

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was initiated by


seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati
and Madras) along with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. It is a programme under the
Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, initiated in 2003 for the
creation of web and video courses. Currently more than 940 + courses are available on the web
portal http://nptel.ac.in for viewing and download at no cost.

Pondicherry Engineering College has been rated AAA on July 2017 and is one of the top
10 NPTEL Local Chapters. As per ranking, it is in 5th position amongst 1010 colleges all over
INDIA.

College was felicitated with a Plaque on 15th July 2017 at the SPOC workshop held at IIT
Chennai by Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Chairman, NPTEL PIC, Director, IIT Chennai.

Toppers in different courses were 9 and 140 obtained an ELITE certificate.

C. TECHNICAL EDUCATION QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME PHASE – II (TEQIP)

TEQIP-II has come to closure on 31st March 2017. Third Phase of Technical Education
Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-III) has been approved by the Govt of India to be
implemented as a 'Central Sector Scheme' with total project outlay of Rs.3600 crore. However,
the Project is being initiated with an initial cost of Rs 2660 Cr. The initiation and
implementation of the project TEQIP-III will bridge the gap for the institutions in the central,
eastern and north-eastern region and hill States with specific interventions.

Further, TEQIP-III is scheduled to be launched from 1st April 2017 with specific focus on
Low Income States (LIS), Hill states, states of the North East and Andaman & Nicobar Islands to
help Focus states in catching up with their more advanced neighbors and match their
attainment levels with that of National standard.

The well performing institutions of TEQIP-I & II Government/Government aided


institutes/ATUs across the country have been be considered for participation in twinning
arrangement as Mentor Institutions under Sub-Component 1.3: Twinning Arrangements to
Build Capacity and Improve Performance of Participating Institutions and ATUs in the Focus
States. For this purpose, a cluster of performance based ranked institutions has been identified.

The key areas include knowledge transfer, exchange of experience, optimizing the
use of resources and developing long-term strategic partnerships. An Agreement will be
entered between the mentor and the mentee institute for execution of the twinning
arrangements.

The top ranking institutions will be invited to submit Institutional Development


proposals. It is to inform that Pondicherry Engineering College institute has been shortlisted
as Mentor institute based on the Academic information provided by the Institute.

Further, final selection will be made through Challenge/ Competitive method among the
shortlisted institutes. These institutions will act as Mentor institutions for the Focus state
institutions under Sub-Component 1.1 as well as work for their own development.

It is to state that Pondicherry Engineering College is one of 18 Institutions shortlisted as


Mentor Institute out of 166 Institutions participated in TEQIP-II.

In this regard, it also to state that the as per the Funding Pattern of Centrally Sponsored
Schemes, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, UT of Puducherry will be funded 100% by
the Central Government.

D. FUND FOR IMPROVEMENT OF S&T INFRASTRUCTURE (FIST) PROGRAMME

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, provides grant-in-
aid to universities / colleges across the country under the FIST (Fund for Improvement of
Science and Technology) program. This financial support is given for a period of 5 years to PG
institutions for acquiring state-of-the-art equipment and setting up laboratories for conducting
internationally competitive research. On the basis of proposal submitted by the college, DST
has sanctioned Rs. 100 lakhs (under the category, Level – 01) for 5 years. As a 1st instalment of
the grant, Rs. 82,50,000/- (Rupees Eighty Two Lakh and Fifty Thousand only) has been
sanctioned under the FIST program under the Head, “Creation of Capital Assets”. On receipt of
this 1st installment of the grant, initiatives have been taken to procure major equipment for
Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics and Electronics & Communication departments under e-
tendering through Pondicherry Government portal. In response to our call for quotations
through e-tendering, quotations have been received from suppliers and comparative
statements have been prepared for respective items. 72nd Purchase Committee meeting of the
Engineering College (Pondicherry) Society held on 23/1/2017 has approved the purchase of
equipments for the respective departments and Purchase orders were released. Major
equipments in the Mechanical, EEE and ECE were procurred and installed in the laboratories.
The research scholars and graduate students are utilizing the facilities incurred through DST-
FIST project. The final phase of procurement of equipments through the project is ongoing.

E. PMKVY - NSDC Certificates Distribution Ceremony:

The Pondicherry Engineering College is approved by AICTE, New Delhi for conducting
skill development courses under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme.

Pondicherry Engineering College has conducted three courses namely, Set Top box
installation and service technician, Junior Mechanic (Engine) and Customer Service Executive
under PMKVY-TI Scheme of AICTE, New Delhi.

On 12th September 2017 certificate distribution function was arranged for candidates
qualified by National Skill Development Corporation. The Principal Prof. Dr. P. Dananjayan
addressed the gathering and presented certificates to the qualified candidates. Prof.

Dr.K.Mahadevan, HOD (Mech) and Prof. Dr. M. Sugumaran, HOD (CSE), faculty co-ordinators
and Staff members of the PMKVY-TI courses graced the function by their valuable presence.

F. NATIONAL INSTITUTE RANKING FRAMEWORK (NIRF)

PEC has been ranked 53 by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of
Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India among Engineering Institutions in India
this year.
