Preparation of Benzopinacol from Benzophenone using Isopropyl Alcohol and

Acetic Acid

Apparatus Reagents
Round Bottom Flask
Benzophenone
Spatula
Beaker Isopropyl Alcohol
Reflux Condenser Glacial Acetic Acid
Hotplate
Filter Paper
Electronic Balance

Procedure

1. Weigh 0.9 g of Benzophenone and add it to the Round Bottom Flask.

2. Add 10 mL of isopropyl alcohol.
3. Prepare a solution of 13mL of glacial acetic acid and 2.8mL of distilled water in a
beaker.
4. Add above solution to the Round Bottom Flask.
5. Attach a reflux condenser to the flask with a heating mantle attached below.
6. Reflux for two hours.
7. After 2 hours, separate liquid from the solid present in the flask.
8. Cool till room temperature. Precipitates will appear.
9. Filter the solution.

10. Dry and weigh.

Calculations

(Since, Benzophenone is the limiting reactant)

Benzophenone : Benzopinacol

Mole Ratio 2 : 1

Molar Mass (2 x 182.217 g / mol) : 366.45 g / mol

Given Mass 0.9 g : xg

0.9 g of Benzophenone will yield = (0.9 x 366.45) / (2 x 182.217)

= 0.91 g of Benzopinacol

% Yeild Obtained = (0.65 / 0.91) x 100 = 71.43%
