What is the Shock Pulse Method?

SPM - Shock Pulse Method

Wear, bad lubrication

► It is the PRÜFTECHNIK method for
level 1 roller bearing monitoring

► PRÜFTECHNIK owns the patent

on the Tandem-Piezo® sensor, which is designed
for vibration and shock pulse measurement

► With help of the sensor's resonance frequency at

around 36 kHz two values are generated:
dBm - discrete damages in the bearing (pitting)
dBc - information on rolling noise (lubrication)

► Trending of these two values delivers an easy

tool for monitoring the bearing condition
discrete damages
► Shock Pulse Method can be used as a
trigger (adaptive task) for in-depth (cage, races, balls)
analysis (e.g. envelope spectrum)

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 3

A SPM trend in OMNITREND®

dBm
m = max
indicator for spike energy
(discrete damages)

dBc
c = carpet
indicator for rms energy
(wear, lubrication)

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 4

Principle

discrete defects
cause a broad
frequency band

► The discrete defects (or the wear) cause a

broad frequency band

► The bearing starts to resonate at its

resonance frequency

► The bearing does not just have one sharp

resonance frequency but resonates in
several frequencies in the ultrasonic range

► The resonating bearing excites also the

sensor at its resonance frequency at
around 36kHz

► The peaks of the signal is used to generate

the dBm value

the bearing ► The rms value (energy) of the signal is

resonates used to calculate the dBc value

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 5

Analogy: Defect - Bearing

► The impacts of the pittings/defects

act like a hammer hitting a bell (i.e. the bearing)

► The bell resonates at its

resonance frequency (bearing resonates)

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 6

Analogy: Bearing - Sensor

► The tune of the bell (bearing) excites a tuning fork

(resonance frequency of the sensor)

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 7

Analogy: Overview

Defects of the bearing excite the resonance The sensor's natural resonance frequency is excited
frequency of the bearing. by the "ringing" bearing. A signal is generated.

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 8

Principle

► The resonating bearing excites the sensor

at its resonance frequency

► The Shock Pulse Method values are

generated and indicate the level of bearing
defects

sensor's resonance frequency

dBm

dBc

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 9

Another analogy - dBc

Noise in the passenger cabin

► Imagine you are driving a car on a perfect street

► Low acoustic noise in the passenger cabin

► The worse the streets surface gets,

the louder is the noise

► A well lubricated bearing without wear

generates a very low rms value

► The dBc value is low

► The worse the lubricant (or wear) is,

the higher is the dBc value

a rising dBc trend

may indicate
lubrication or wear problems

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 10

Another Analogy

Potholes on the street

► Imagine your car goes into a pothole

► Your hole car (and you as well) are

shocked

► Discrete defects within the bearing a rising dBm trend

excite the whole bearing may indicate
discrete bearing defects
► The more spiky the signal is, (inner/outer race, cage or balls)
the higher is the dBm value

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 11

PT sensors providing Shock Pulse

► Only our CLD sensors with

a resonance frequency
at around 36 kHz provide
Shock Pulse

► Our "standard" handheld

sensor for example does

► All sensors with this symbol

in the catalogue provide
Shock Pulse

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 12

PT sensors providing SPM

accelerometers for permanent (online, remote) mounting

► Only these sensors

provide the possibility for ► Note:
Shock Pulse Method! VIBNODE® and
VIBROWEB® XP
do not provide Shock

Magnetic holders and SPM

Some remarks on the

magnetic holders

► Shock pulse
measurement with
magnetic holder is not
recommended

► There maybe cases

where it works

► This is a physical
restriction

► However, you can do

envelope analysis
(acceleration)

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 16

Normalization: Yes or No?

Why normalization → Comparison

► You do not necessarily need

normalization…

► The not normalized value is called

dBSV

► If you trend this value over some

measurements,
dBSV
the trend already indicates the
condition of your bearing… not normalized SPM value

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 17

Normalization - dBn

non normalized value

dBn: Normalized value

► If you want to compare bearings

(for example on two machines
having the same bearings) dBn = dBSV + dBi + dBa
you need to do a normalization

► First, in the normalization, speed

and diameter (shaft) are taken into
account: dBi

► But also the transmission path of

the signal, the lubrication and load
can vary…
→ dBa

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 18

Normalization

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 19

Setting it up in OMNITREND®

No normalization

► Check the box dBsv in

the Shock Pulse Setup
window - that’s all…

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 20

Setting it up in OMNITREND®

With normalization

► Uncheck the box dBsv

in the Shock Pulse
Setup window

► Type in the requested

parameter for speed
and shaft diameter

► Adjust the dBa value,

so that the carpet
value is at 5dB at a
good bearing (test
measurement
necessary)

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 21

Normalization

Normalization

► Several identical
machines (bearing, rpm,
power, load)

► Look for a reference

machine and normalize
it. → dBc = 5 dB

► Use the same #1 Pump #2 Pump #3 Pump

normalization
► good/new ► same pump type ► same pump type
parameters on the other bearing as #1 pump as #1 pump
machines. You can
directly compare the ► normalize dBc ► use the same ► use the same
condition of the value normalization normalization
parameter parameter
bearings!
► use same dBa
value on the
monitoring of the
other pumps
bearing

Apropos sensors

► The company SPM

developed the Shock
Pulse Method

► However, they have to

do it with two sensors

► Since PRÜFTECHNIK
invented the
Tandem-Piezo®
sensor, we should
quote everywhere,
where SPM wants to
do business…

► This way we have won

already a nice
VIBRONET®
SIGNALMASTER deal

PRÜFTECHNIK Condition Monitoring GmbH – Anton Irlbeck 8/18/2018 28

How to sell PT sensors

Sometimes we get questions like:

"Why should we sell
PRÜFTECHNIK sensors if others
are cheaper" ?

► Our high quality sensors are ► We can implement our sensors in

developed and produced in ATEX areas with very little effort.
Germany and provide some We just need to put in our current
outstanding features limiting device. (VIBRONET®
Signalmaster e.g.)
► Since most of our sensors are
current driven, the cable length is ► And, maybe the most important
not a problem one, our sensors can perform
Shock pulse measurements (SPM)
► Also, the signals are not as for bearing conditions, so the
sensitive to temperature changes customer gets more functionality for
as standard ICP sensors are the price!
