A YEAR WITH OVERSEAS VOLUNTEERS

I was with Overseas Volunteers (OV) for a year after leaving university, and I was sent to an isolated
village in Chad, about 500 km from the capital N'Djamena. Coming from a rich country, I got quite a shock as
conditions were much harder than I had expected. But after a few days I soon got used to living there. The
people were always very friendly and helpful, and soon I began to appreciate how beautiful the countryside
was.
One of my jobs was to supply the village with water. The well was a long walk away. And the women used
to spend a long time every day carrying heavy pots backwards and forwards. So I contacted organization and
arranged to have some pipes delivered. We built a simple pipeline and a pump, and it worked first time. It
wasn't perfect - there were a few leaks, but it made a great difference to the villagers, who had never had
running water before. And not only did we have running water, but in the evenings it was hot, because the
pipe had been lying in the sun all day.
All in all, I think my time with OV was a good experience. Although it was not well-paid, it was well
worth doing, and I would recommend it to anyone who was considering working for a charity.

C. It took a lot of time to take water home from the well.
D. The villagers used to live in conditions without running water.
Câu 34: The word 'It' in line 9 refers to ...........................
A. the pump B. the supply of water C. running water D. the pipeline
Câu 35: What does the author think about his time with OV?

A newspaper makes money from the price people pay for it and also from the
advertisements it carries. A popular newspaper with a circulation of over five million a day
makes a lot of money. Serious newspapers are read principally for their news, sent to them
by their correspondents around the world and by the big news agencies.
People also read these newspapers for their reviews of new books, movies, plays, and
for their editorials, which present the opinion of the newspaper itself about the important
events and issues of the moment. Less serious newspapers are probably read just for
entertainment. They have big headlines above the news stories, funny cartoons to look at

Every day many road accidents happen in Hong Kong. Everyone, especially children
must learn how to cross the road. A simple code to remember is “STOP, LOOK and
LISTEN BEFORE YOU CROSS”.
The Transport Department organizes road safety campaigns every year in order to
reduce traffic accidents. Parents and teachers should educate children on road safety.
Most schools have their own School Road Safety Patrols. The School Road Safety Patrols
25
is a uniformed group. It recruits secondary school students as members. Students in
senior forms help fellow students cross the road correctly and safely on their way to and
from school.
When you go out alone, however, what is the best way to cross the road? First, you
must find a safe place to cross. Of course, it is safest to be directed by a policeman or a
traffic warden. Roads are dangerous. However, if everyone takes care when crossing the
road, there will be fewer traffic accidents. Our transport system will then become safer
and more efficient.
