STANDARD

the task should be stopped and employee’ supervision consulted with directions as to continue
or cease performing the task.

Repack a Centrifugal Pump Gland
PERFORMANCE AND/OR SAFETY STANDARD

1. Ensure it is safe to shutdown the defective equipment.
2. Carry out lockout procedure
1 Location
3. Ensure system is isolated electrically and
mechanically. Drain and depressurize equipment
1. Collect all tools required to carry out this task

Wrenches

Packing extractor
Packing Assembly
Grease gun
1. Remove the two nuts holding the gland follower in
place.
3 Remove 2. Remove the gland follower (item 7)
3. Using the packing extractor, remove the old packing
assembly (Item 6)
1. Install the replacement packing set complete.
4 Install
ENSURE THE JOINTS ARE FITTED ALTERNATELY
1. Replace the gland follower
5 Replace 2. Replace the two nuts securing the gland follower in
place
1. Tighten the gland follower adjusting nuts to compress
the packing. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN AT THIS
STAGE. Over tightening will cause the pump shaft
6 Adjust
to overheat and also shorten the life of the
packing. Leading to early failure
2. Grease the gland packing using the grease gun
1. De isolate the fluid system and check for leaks. If the
packing is still leaking, tighten the gland follower
7 De isolate
securing nuts until the leak stops. DO NOT
OVETIGHTEN AT THIS STAGE

1. Remove lockout on the pump
2. If it is safe to do so run the pump and check for leaks.
If there is excessive leakage, shut down the pump and
readjust the gland follower securing nuts. NOTE A
8 Test
SLIGHT LEAK IS ACCEPTABLE. NO LEAKAGE
WILL CAUSE THE SHAFT TO OVERHEAT AND
BURN THE PACKING. LEADING TO EARLY
FAILURE.
