OLD SCHOOL ROLE PLAYING

What is Old School Role Playing about?

At Old School we are all about the classic version of role playing games that were
popular in the late 1970s to the early 1980s. You know the games. You played them as kids.
They were far better than many of the later versions that came along. At Old School we bring you
high quality adventures and adventure products for gaming at a reasonable price.

The adventures themselves are well thought out. They have a few puzzles, riddles and
other encounters as well as plenty of monster bashing action. Some have been thoroughly play
tested by other gamers. The goal is to provide you the game master adventures to use on the spur
of the moment when players want to play and you do not have the time to prepare something
spectacular.

While resting between jobs the travelers are approached by a representative of the Hydra
Corporation. Hydra does scientific research in a number of diverse areas. Some of this research is
not entirely legal. An Robertson is a scientist and low ranking manager with the Hydra
Corporation. He offers CR 30000 for acquisition of a new strain of flower being grown by a
competitor. This flower is believed to have hallucinogenic properties when consumed through
smoke or by grinding it’s petals into flour. These properties are also believed to have psi
enhancing effects.

These flowers are a genetically enhanced product and not natural to any planet in the sector. The
Halek Corporation has been growing this strain for purposes unknown to the Hydra Corporation
aboard agricultural ships kept at a distance from any competitors. However, Hydra has
discovered that one of these ships will be visiting New Xehadia in the Kaloon sub-sector in four
days. If the travelers can get to that planet quickly they would have several opportunities to
obtain a sample of this flower and deliver it to the Hydra Corporation. This ship is called the
Shamburan.

This adventure takes place in the Sonora Sector. The Sonora sector is detailed in my previous
work entitled “The Frontiers of Space.” It is not essential that the mission take place there. It
could easily be moved to some other sector of space in the Game Master’s universe.

Few missions of this sort are as straight forward as they first might seem. Sometimes there are
unforseen issues. And sometimes the patron does not disclose all of the relevant details. In this
mission both of these are true. Some of these complications include:

1. There are guards aboard the ship. Certainly An Robertson knows this but does not
mention it. This is, of course, to be expected. But he will feign ignorance of this if
questioned.

2. Customs officials on New Xehadia are not easily bribed. This world is an agricultural
world and the customs officials are more sensitive to the needs of those who grow crops
than those of off worlders. Bribing them is at a penalty of -3 to the roll.

3. This flower is more than hallucinogenic. It is actually toxic to be around without the
proper gear. A respirator mask or a vacc suit will prevent spores from these plants from
being breathed in. Anyone not wearing such gear will find that they must roll a 9 or more
on 2D6 when exposed to the flowers or suffer 1D6 damage for every ten minutes in
proximity to the plants. This should be apparent quickly as the workers on the agro ship
will all be wearing such masks when near the plants.

The Shamburan is an agricultural ship. It has special provisions for growing plants aboard. One
of the rooms of this ship is set up to be a green house. Artificial sunlight is provided so that the
plants can thrive aboard the craft. Air circulation aboard the ship is tightly controlled so that the
spores from the plants aboard will not be breathed in by ship’s crew or agricultural workers
residing in other parts of the ship.

The vessel has no ship’s weapons. It tends to stay near populated systems so that pirates are not
an issue. Generally the Shamburan stays in primary shipping lanes and rarely visits planets
except for resupply or repair. The Halek Corporation keeps a close eye on this ship. Industrial
espionage is not unknown in this line of business. Armed guards are always aboard the craft even
when in port.

The ship itself is 1200 tons. It has jump two capability but will generally be found traveling
slowly in space lanes.

While in port none of the crew or agro workers will stay aboard except for the engineers and the
following Halek Corporation guards:

1. Army Captain Wen Saar 899396 Age 26

2 terms
Skills: ATV-1, Leader-1, Mechanical-1, Rifle-2, SMG-1, Tactics-1
He is armed with a rifle

2. Army Captain Trisha Brown 7BAB57 Age 22

1 term
Skills: Brawling-1, Rifle-2, SMG-2, Tactics-1
She is armed with a rifle

When not in port the above two guards will be present as well as the following guards:

1. Army Lieutenant Manon Colombo 554887 Age 22

1 term
Skills: Computer-1, Leader-1, Rifle-1, SMG-2
Armed with an SMG.

2. Army Lieutenant Thaddaeus Han 584668 Age 22

Armed with a rifle

3. Army Major Harper Cohen 9A3447 Age 30

3 terms
Skills: Fwd Obsvr-1, Rifle-2, SMG-2, Spear-2, Tactics-1
Armed with an SMG. He commands the Halek Corporation Guards aboard the
Shamburan. He wears a blue access card around his neck which will allow access to the
bridge.

Generally these guards will be found in area 2 guarding the plants themselves. All will be
wearing respirator masks while in the presence of the plants or any time that they are encountered
in area 2. These guards might respond to diversions or loud noises in other parts of the ship if
they occur.

KEY TO THE SHAMBURAN

1. Airlock

There is but one airlock aboard the Shamburan for security reasons. The corporation
places guards here at all times to prevent unauthorized entry. While in space or in port
there will always be but one guard on duty here:

Marine Aarav Ito 687948 Age 22

1 term
Skills: ATV-1, Cutlass-1, Gambling-1
Armed with a cutlass and a rifle.

2. Green House

This is the area in which the plants are grown. The flower is known as the Usharian
Orchid. Usharia is a world with an exotic atmosphere in the Sonora Sector. This flower
originally grew only on this planet but has been genetically modified to enhance it’s
special properties.

At all times there will be guards present in this room. These guards will be the ones listed
above. Not all need be present when the travelers arrive. Some could be off duty or could
be eating or performing duties elsewhere. My suggestion is to roll randomly (1D6 divided
by 2 and rounded up and add one. That will give a range of 2-4 guards being present in
the room at any time). All guards will be wearing respirator masks in this area.

There will also be agriculture workers here. There will be 1D6 +1 agro workers here at all
times. These workers will all be wearing the respirator masks.. Determine these workers
randomly from the table at the end of the adventure.
It is dangerous to be in this room for long without wearing one of the respirator masks or
a vacc suit. Exposure of more than a few minutes should result in a roll as mentioned
above. Anyone not wearing such gear will find that they must roll a 9 or more on 2D6
when exposed to the flowers or suffer 1D6 damage for every ten minutes in proximity to
the plants.

Artificial sunlight is always shining in this room. All of the plants are neatly in rows on
tables set up in the room. Each of these tables is attended by an agro worker pruning
leaves and discarding dead plants. Automatic sprinklers engage regularly to supply water
to the plants. Naturally normal gravity is always part of the environment aboard the
Shamburan. These strange orchids seem to move on their own in their pots. Each of the
orchids is planted in a separate pot made of plastic.

3. Engineering

Engineering will always be occupied whether the ship is in space or in port. At any time there
will be at least two engineers present while in port. In space the entire compliment of engineers
will usually be present. They generally sleep and eat here in the engineering section. None will be
armed unless otherwise stated here.

The Shamburan has jump capability and the drives for such are located here. There are also
maneuver drives located here. The ship is quite slow and moves at the slowest possible rate for
star ships (other than jumping).

4. Mess Hall

All meals are served in this location. A small kitchenette provides the meals which are prepared
by two cooks which will always be present here at meal times. At non meal times this room is
often used by off duty personnel playing cards or relaxing.

Officers, crew and guards alike use the beds in this area for sleeping. Roll randomly on the table
in the last area for inhabitants found here. At any time there is likely to be 1D6+1 person here.
Half will be sleeping.

6. The Bridge

A blue access card is needed to open the sealed and locked doorway to the bridge. It could be
blasted open, of course, but this would be quite hazardous. The ship controls are located here.
The ship can only be piloted from this area. Present at all times here will be the following
persons:

1. Navy Captain Fatima Dubois 967BCQ Age 46

7 terms
Skills: Admin-2, Engineering-2, Fwd Obsvr-1, Gunnery-2, Mechanical-2,

All persons here, of course, wear blue access cards around their neck which allow them entry to
this area.

To succeed, and get paid, the travelers will need to deliver an intact flower to the An Robertson
at the same planet in which he meets them initially. Payment will be made on delivery. If the
travelers can effect this acquisition without discovery of the theft a bonus of CR 10000 will be
made. This bonus will be nearly impossible to obtain.

Here are some possible ways that the travelers could acquire this flower:

1. Travel to New Xehadia and stow away aboard the ship. The ship will be at the Class C
star port on that world for two days for repairs and resupply

2. Board the ship in flight as it exits New Xehadia

3. Bribe their way aboard the ship during it’s stay at the star port

Obviously it is possible that the travelers may think of other ways of obtaining the flower that I
have not listed here or considered. The Game Master must adjudicate such methods and their
chances of success. All of these methods have risk of discovery. Most of these methods have risk
of far more than that.

Attempting to take over the ship and resell it somewhere is likely to fail for obvious reasons:

1. The ship is owned and registered to the Halek Corporation which will certainly alert the
authorities to a theft of it’s ship and possible murder of it’s employees

2. Halek will almost certainly hire mercenaries to retake what belongs to it and avenge the
deaths of any employees

3. Agro ships are not at all common at star ports in the Sonora Sector and will stand out like
a sore thumb. Only a few select corporations use these ships and potential buyers will be
infrequent.

All agro workers will be armed only with a trowel (dagger equivalent) unless otherwise stated
below:

2. Emma Pavlov 846757 Age 22

1 term
Skills: Agriculture -1
