ENR 5 NAVIGATION WARNINGS

ENR 5.1 PROHIBITED, RESTRICTED AND DANGER AREAS

Areas within which a potential hazard to aircraft operations may exist, either temporarily or permanently, are
classified according to the following three types of areas as defined by ICAO: Prohibited, Restricted and Danger.

Each area is numbered from a single series of numbers, regardless of type, to ensure that a number is never
duplicated. Each area is as small as practicable and contained within simple geometrical limits such as circle, square,
etc.

The type of area involved is indicated by the letter “P” for Prohibited, “R” for Restricted and “D” for Danger,
preceded by the National letters “LP”. For example: areas are assigned numbers and letters in the following manner:
LPP1, LPR2, LPD3, etc.

These areas are identified by the name of a nearby town or city or geographic feature.

Some areas (Restricted and Danger) are managed and allocated the day before operations by the AMC. They are
identified as “AMC Manageable Area”.

Other Danger and Restricted Areas that are not suitable for AMC management are identified as “NON AMC
Manageable Area”.

Finally, there are also Restricted and Danger Areas that are activated by NOTAM.

The applicable upper and lower limits for each area are identified in column 2 and they can be expressed in terms of
height, altitude or FL.

5.1.1 Prohibited Area

An airspace of defined dimensions, above the land areas or territorial waters of a State, within which, the flight of
aircraft is prohibited. This term is used only when the flight of aircraft within the designated airspace is not permitted
at any time under any circumstances.

5.1.2 Restricted Area

An airspace of defined dimensions, above the land areas or territorial waters of a State, within which the flight of
aircraft is restricted in accordance with certain specified conditions. This term is used whenever the flight of aircraft
within the designated airspace is not absolutely prohibited but may be made only if specified conditions are complied
with. Thus, prohibition of flight, unless special permission had been obtained, leads to the designation of a restricted
area.

However, conditions of flight imposed as a result of application of rules of the air or air traffic services practices or
procedures (for example, compliance with minimum safe heights or with rules stemming from the establishment of
controlled airspace) do not constitute conditions calling for designation as a restricted area.

The first code letter after the number of the Restricted Area designator means the identification of each area
according their activity, as follows:

A – Military CTR (example: LPR26A);

B – Military CTA (example: LPR60B);

C, D, ... – Other (example: LPR51C).

The second code letter has the following meaning:

N – North (example: LPR40BN);

S – South (example : LPR40BS).

5.1.3 Danger Area
An airspace of defined dimensions within which activities dangerous to the flight of aircraft may exist at specified
times. This term is used only when the potential danger to the aircraft has not led to the designation of the airspace as
restricted or prohibited. The effect of the creation of the danger area is to caution operators or pilots of aircraft that
it is necessary for them to assess the danger in relation to their responsibility for the safety of their aircraft.
