1 First Day Project

Purpose.  The purpose of this project is twofold.  First, students need to become familiar with using 
tools. Second, each student will learn how to work in a chemistry lab, use some of the available 
equipment and to analyze the data collected.

Problems.  Does the weight (in grams) of a penny depend upon the year in which it was minted?  If 
there are any connections between weight and year of minting, what are they and how do they change?

Procedure.  Each student will weigh four different pennies and record their weights and year of 
minting.  All the data from the class will be pooled,  and each student will individually analyze the 
collected information.  Each student will illustrate the collected data with a graph either made by hand 
or one made by using a computer graphing program..

Gathering Data.  The following are some points you should think about and discuss with your lab 
partner and your instructor.

• How do you think the weight of a penny will depend on its age?

• If another student records a penny weight on the board that is wildly different from 
others minted in the same year, am I justified in ignoring this piece of data?

• How should the weight and date data be shown on a graph or chart?  In other words, 
what should the graph look like?  What should be shown on the x­axis?  What on the y­
axis?  Should we plot all the data points or just estimate average values?  Should data 
points be connected with a line on the graph?  Should there be a line showing the trend 
in all the data?

Data Table.  Each student will make a data table for their own use that contains both their own and the 
class data on the back of this page.  Your Instructor must sign this data table before you leave class!
