Scam to Steal Money

on Whatsapp and Olx

We all are aware regarding the scam calls which we regularly
keep on receiving from various scammers. They offer us lucrative
gifts and options to redeem our money and then they ask us for
our bank account number, and we know it very well that how they
withdraw all our money once we give our account number to
those scammers. We all are used to these type of scam calls and
we know that how to dodge those scammers. But, the game has
changed to an all new level.
How’s This
Happening?
The scammers are trying to scam the people on
different platforms like whatsapp and olx. So, what’s basically
happening? Cases have started popping in Gurugram. When
people post ads for selling different products like furniture or
gadgets, they get offers from scammers. After some time,
consumers receive a call where they get offers from scammers.
The first thing a scammer may say is that he can’t meet you in
person because of different reasons. After this they will ask you
for your number for payment, but soon they will inform you
regarding the failure of payment. Now, they will send you a QR
code and will ask you to scan the QR code so that they can pay
you the money. So, from this very moment you should be alarmed
to not fell in the trap. Once you scan the QR code and enter the
pin, your money will be deducted from your account. Below is
what happened in Kerala:
Mr. Shravan a resident of Kerala also fell in such a trap
laid by the scammers. Shravan was selling his refrigerator on a
C2C website, later that evening, he received a message where he
got an offer of Rs.8000. The scammer asked him for his phone
number so that they can send him the money and Shravan felt
quite secured and gave his phone number. The scammers said
that the payment isn’t proceeding and is failing in every attempt.
So, the scammers gave their QR code to Shravan through
whatsapp and asked him to scan it so that he can make the
payment. As Shravan scanned the QR code his money got
deducted from his bank account.
So what should people
do in such cases?
Citizens should know that we need to scan a QR code
only for making payments, not for receiving them. Also, one
should never accept the QR code if we don’t know the source of a
QR code. People need to make sure that even if you feel that
someone isn’t asking you for your personal information like your
bank account details or your UPI pin, you still could be scammed
by the scammers. We need to understand that the scammers also
keep on updating their technical know-how so that scamming
innocent people becomes easier for them. So, always stay
secured while dealing in such matters and make sure not to fall
trap in such incidents.
