Scammers are targeting people on platforms like WhatsApp and OLX by offering to purchase items they have listed for sale. They claim they are unable to pay and send the victim a QR code to scan for payment, but scanning the code actually deducts money from the victim's bank account. For example, a man in Kerala lost Rs. 8000 after a scammer convinced him to scan a QR code for payment after offering to buy his refrigerator. Citizens are advised to only scan QR codes to make payments, not receive them, and to be wary of any unsolicited QR codes from unknown sources. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated so people need to stay vigilant to avoid falling victim to such scams.
