which was a game that combined tag with throwing.

13 RULES OF BASKETBALL
1. The ball can be thrown in any direction.
2. The ball may be batted with both hand.
3. The player cannot run with the ball.
4. The ball must be held by the hands.
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping
of an opponent.
6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violations of
rules 3 and 4 and such described with the rules 5.
7. Three consecutive fouls will be a goal for the
opponent.
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown from the
ground into the basket and stays there.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown
into the field and played by the first person touching it.
10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall
note the fouls and notify the referee.
11. The referee shall judge of the ball and shall decide
when the ball is in play, in bounds to, which side it
belongs and shall keep the time.
12. The time shall be two-fifteen halves, with five
minutes rest between.
13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be
declared the winner.

Dr. Naismith suggested the 9 players be arranged on the
floor; 1 goalkeeper, 2 guards, 3 center, 2 wings and 1
home man
-basketball is first played in Olympics at Berlin, Germany.
-National Basketball League (NBL) formed in 1937 and
Basketball Association of America formed in 1946. but
the two officially combined on August 3, 1949.

1929- use of rope and chicken wire cage around the
basketball court is discontinued.

1962- Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points against New
York Knicks to lead Ph Warriors to a 169-247.
1974-1975- Moses Malone signs with Utah Stars of the
ABA becoming the first player to go directly from
highschool into the pros.
1992- professional basketball players are allowed in the
Olympics and the “Dream Team”

One Trillion- denotes a player who has played one
minute without recording any statistics.
Overtime- the extra period played after game ends.
Triple Double- when a player has 3 statistics that have 2
figures (12 pts. 14 rebs. 10 assists)
Assist- passing the ball to teammate who immediately
scores a basket after receiving a pass.
Dribbling- act of bouncing the ball continuously.
Travelling- a violation that occurs when a player holding
the ball moves one or both of his feet without dribbling.
Garbage time- the last few minutes of game, when the
outcome has been decided.
Pivotman- the center, the player who stays nearest to
the basket.
Sixthman- the first man to enter the game as a
substitute.
Substitution-
Curtain time- the point in the game when no one has no
chance to catch up.
Four corners- it sets one man in each of the four corners
of the offensive zone with fifth man designated to
handle the ball much of the time.
Full court press- the tactic of applying defensive pressure
even before a team moves the ball inbounds maintaining
that pressure all the way downcourt.
Transition game- the act of switching from offense to
defense smoothly.
Nosebleeder- a player who jumps so high he can suffer
nose bleed from the change of altitude.
Belly up- to play tight defense, with particularly no space
between 2 opposing players.
Pivot- to turn, often toward the basket, by keeping one
foot stationary and moving the other.
Sag- to let the man you are guarding go free while you
keep your teammate defended against other opposing
team.
Flagrant foul- serious unsportsmanlike person contact
with an opponent.
Technical foul- unsportsmanlike non-contact behavior.
Offensive foul- rule violation committed by a member of
the team playing the offense.
Charging- a foul committed when the player with the
ball runs into an opponent who has clearly established a
defensive position.
Hack-a-shag- a defensive strategy in basketball.
