COMPUTATION EXERCISE NO. 01

In-Situ Stresses
Stresses In Soil Mass

INSTRUCTIONS:
● Answer the following problems.
● Box your final answer/s. Unboxed answered will not receive any credit.
● Use the “Give-Required-Solution” format for solving the problems. A deduction of 2 pts
per item will be applied if this format is not used.
● Round of your final answers to three decimal places.

PROBLEM 1:
Calculate σ, u, and σ’ at A, B, C, and D for the
figure shown for the following cases and plot the
variations with depth. (Note: e = void ratio, w =
moisture content, Gs = specific gravity of soil
solids, 𝛾d = dry unit weight, and 𝛾sat = saturated
unit weight).

Problem Details Of Soil Layer

I II III

𝛾d = 112 lb/ft3 𝛾sat = 120 lb/ft3 𝛾sat = 125 lb/ft3
2 H1 = 5 ft H2 = 10 ft H3 = 9 ft
3
𝛾d = 100 lb/ft 𝛾sat = 116 lb/ft3 𝛾sat = 122 lb/ft3
3 H1 = 3 m H2 = 4 m H3 = 5 m
3
𝛾d = 15 kN/m 𝛾sat = 16 kN/m3 𝛾sat = 18 kN/m3
4 H1 = 4 m H2 = 5 m H3 = 3 m
e = 0.4 e = 0.6 e = 0.81
Gs = 2.62 Gs  = 2.68 Gs  = 2.73
5 H1 = 4 m H2 = 3 m H3 = 1.5 ft
e = 0.6 e = 0.52 w = 40%
Gs = 2.65 Gs = 2.68 e = 1.1

PROBLEM 2:
An exploratory drill hole was made
in a stiff saturated clay as shown.
The sand layer underlying the clay
was observed to be under artesian
pressure. Water in the drill hole
rose to a height of 12 ft above the
top of the sand layer. If an open
excavation is to be made in the
clay, how deep can the excavation
proceed before the bottom
heaves?
PROBLEM 3:
Referring to the figure shown. If H1 = 1.5 m, H2 =
2.5 m, h = 1.5 m, 𝛾sat = 18.6 kN/m3, hydraulic
conductivity of sand (k) = 0.12 cm/sec, and area
of tank = 0.45 m2, what is the rate of upward
seepage of water (m3/min)?

PROBLEM 5:
For the following variables, calculate and plot σ, u, σ’ and depth. Refer to the figure shown.
a. H1 = 8 ft, H2 = 8 ft, H3 = 8 ft, degree of saturation in capillary rise zone, S (%) = 50
b. H1 = 5 m, H2 = 3 m, H3 = 3.5 m, degree of saturation in capillary rise zone, S (%) = 65

vertical stress at a depth of 10 ft point D.

PROBLEM 8:
Determine the vertical stress increase, Δσz, at point A with the following data:
q1 = 75 kN/m x1 = 4 m
q2 = 300 kN/m x2 = 3 m
z=2m
