In this section, I've compiled some important information about the projects in this book to ensure successful crocheting, including: tips on selecting your tools and materials, details on reading the instructions, and an explanation of basic crochet stitches and techniques. Find a cozy space, relax, and enjoy crocheting these colorful and contemporary designs! Tools and Materials Yarn Selecting your yarn is one of the most important and exciting aspects of crocheting. You won't need expensive novelty yarns for the projects in this book. These designs utilize color to transform basic yarn. This book lists the amount of yarn and describes the for each project. As you will be makin suggested fiber content and yarn weight neede these very special pieces by hand, we recommend using high-quality natural fibers, as wool and mohair, When selecting your yarn, pay attention to yarn weight, which yarn, The yarn's weight will influence the finished appear- sui indicates the thickness of th ance of your project. Keep in mind that you may actually end up using a different size hook than recom- mended based on your yarn and your personal crochet tension. Gauge Most of the projects in this book specify the gauge, or the number of stitches and rows in a given area of crochet. It is important that your gauge is the same as the gauge stated in the project instructions, This will ensure that your project ends up with the correct finished measurements. In order to ensure accuracy, always make a gauge swatch to test your gauge before you begin a project. To make a gauge swatch, simply crochet a5" (12.5 cm) square piece using the yarn, hook, and stitch specified in the project instructions. Lay the swatch on a flat surface and measure the number of stitches and rows within a4” (10 cm) area. If you have more stitches than the instructions call for, try using a larger hook. If you have fewer stitches than the instructions call for, trying using a smaller hook. Continue making swatches until your measurements match the gauge listed in the project instructions. Although making a gauge swatch may seem unnecessary, it is actually one of the most important steps in crocheting, Taking a few extra min- utes to test your gauge will prevent endless frustration and will lead to well-fitting, perfectly sized finished products. Before You Begin 53 How to Read Crochet Patterns and Charts In this book, the crochet instructions are provided with the help of patterns and charts. The patterns contain symbols, while the charts list rows and stitch or color information. The diagrams below explain how to read and use these patterns and charts to crochet the projects.
