It’s all too easy to sit behind a

keyboard and call yourself an
activist - b0etter to get out there
and take action! Every year, World
AIDS Day (1st December) gives us
an opportunity to discuss pressing
issues around HIV services in our own
communities and around the world.
But how do you get involved? For a
decade, the Red Run has given us
Londoners the chance to get stuck
in, make a difference and raise some
much needed funds.

Taking over Victoria Park and painting

5k walk draws in thousands looking
to take part. It’s a perfect opportunity
for the community to get together
for a good cause, and build a sense
of community around an important
issue. Adding a little pizzazz to this
year’s proceedings will be British
theatre royalty! Grabbing the scissors
and sheering the glistening red ribbon
this year will be famed thespian
and first lady first lady of us London
queers, Sir Ian McKellen CBE.
Speaking about this year’s event, Sir
Ian shared:

The only event of its kind in the UK, the Red Run is open to anyone
looking to get involved, regardless of age or ability. Also running
along side the athletic event is an day of events aimed at bringing
some much-needed attention to the HIV sector and creating a
platform for HIV organisations across the country to raise awareness
and vital funds for their work. The event will be raising funds for over
35 HIV charities who do important work here in London and beyond.

In addition to Sir Ian McKellen cutting the start ribbon, the 2019
Red Run will be hosted by iconic drag band DENIM. The glitter-
dipped queens will be holding court and keeping our runners
motivated with shablams for the gods, and the sassy thrust of a
hand fan. Over a frantically excited phone call, Denim told us:

Also supporting the event are Vauxhall-favourite boozer The
Eagle and party collective Horse Meat Disco providing thumping
bops for runners to enjoy. Nothing gets the blood pumping like
those booming disco tunes. Sweat bands at the ready, and get
prepared to push yourself. Or if you’re just heading over for the
leisurely walk, you can always take a breather and shake your
caboose to some Diana Ross mixes.

If you’re not quite clued up on the history of HIV and AIDS here in
the UK, there’ll be a pop-up AIDS Memorial featuring panels of the
UK AIDS Memorial Quilt. It’s a rare chance to get up close and
personal with the history that brought us to where we are today.
The Wellcome Collection have also loaned a small collection of
HIV and AIDS public health poster campaigns for the afternoon,
giving interesting insight into how they keep the public informed.
Spectators and runners will be free to browse the stalls from
various HIV charities, as well as enjoy a free cup of coffee all
afternoon long. One of the charities getting involved is Red Run
host Positive East. Talking about the event, Positive East director
Mark Santos told us:

marks it’s thirtieth night at the RVT! They’re
celebrating by flying in Norwegian pop trio
KEiiNO (pictured). Plus they’re bringing back
their much loved “Second Cherry” content –
songs that had a pop at the chance to compete
in Eurovision, but just missed out. Audiences
will get the chance to vote on which they think

is endless. For any young gay kid, it’s this imagined
haven where community and debauchery go hand
in hand. Little do you know that a night out in Soho
often doesn’t amount to much more than a handjob
in a bar toilet followed by a lap full of soggy chips at
4 am. Soho Cinders at Charing Cross Theatre re-
ignites the excitement of your first night in Soho, with
every corner vibrating with possibilities. This show
is sure to be one of the gayest things you'll see this
year.
We meet the young and handsome Robbie (Luke
Bayer) as he struggles to keep his mother’s Soho
laundrette open, especially as his evil step-sisters
Clodagh (Michaela Stern) and Dana (Natalie
Harman) hike up the rent. Luckily he has the help of
trusted friend Velcro (Millie O’Connell) to keep his
spirits up, and a handful of dates with the city’s more
well-off older men. Not quite enthused with Lord
Bellingham (Christopher Coleman) who insists on
handing him money, Robbie’s heart is set on mayoral
candidate James Prince (Lewis Asquith). There’s just
one thing standing between them: the soon-to-be
Mrs Prince.
Loosely based around the familiar story of
Cinderella, the Stiles and Drewe musical makes for
thrilling viewing. Packed full of soap-opera plot twists
and cliches, it’s all you could hope for in the gay run-
up to Christmas. A musical inspired by the gayest
neighbourhood in Britain? Hold on to your tap shoes.
The musical numbers are kitschy and catchy and
give this talented company more than enough to play
with. Opening number “Old Compton Street” packs
a real punch which immerses you in this sparkle-
pink world that they’ve created, where newspaper
headlines take precedence over social media and a
central London laundrette is still a viable business
opportunity. With so many musicals going for an “it’s
okay to be different” message, it’s different to see
one with a number and a reprise about wanting to be
normal (“Wishing For The Normal”).
Though our main duo sure has a set of pipes on them,
the evening’s most enjoyable performances come
from our ugly stepsisters. This comedy duo is sure to
get your sides splitting as they writhe around in their
onesies. Their sassy drunken sauntering in “I’m So
Over Men” is equal parts hilarious and relatable. These
two are clearly enjoying the roles as much as we are.
There are a few head-scratching plot points, most
notably Robbie’s “a-ha!” moment when he realises
that his mother actually did probably have him in his
will. And running to catch someone before they grab a
train to Margate doesn’t quite have that same running
through the airport, end of romcom feeling.
This is one show that is sure to have you gagging
for a drink down Old Compton Street after. Skipping
down the neighbourhood’s tarmacked streets,
you’re sure to have “You Shall Go To The Ball” stuck
in your head. When you stand queueing half an
hour for your post-theatre drink, with a drag queen
squawking in one ear and a man leering in the other,
you sure wish you could have headed to the Soho
of Soho Cinders instead.

We Party can always be relied on for a big bash

when there’s any kind of occasion or public
holiday, and Halloween is always one of their
biggest. There were not so much outfits as
LACK OF outfits on show, with loads of guys
turning out in their best erm…naked torso look.
It was packed out as always, taking over the
iconic Electric Brixton with WE Party’s usual
high-octane, high-sexy energy. Proceedings
were helped along by DJ action from WE’s

We’re still REELING from this month’s Sex

Circus. It was pumping muscled flesh as far as
the eye could see. Fire was one bit of sexual
depravity, and we were taking in every second
of it. It’s clear that the summer body is here to
stay in gay London. We spent so much the night

didn’t grab ourselves a boy to kiss. Almost. The

the Jungle Kitty Monster Ball gave us all the ooky
spooky vibes we needed. Despite the fact that
the dolls came in their fiercest fancy dress, and
most of us couldn’t help but spend the night
with our eyes on Drag Race UK’s “Brit Crew”
member Ashraf. He’s just a gorj slice of irresistible
cuteness. The night served refreshing beats from
Conrad Kira, Jords and Not Just Jade, with even
Attitude mag fashion creature Nick Byam getting
in on the action. We’re on tenter hooks for their
next bash on January 3rd. Bring on the New Year,

The London queer scene has a kaleidoscopically diverse range of
LGBTQ+ parties and events if you know where to look, but there
are still some groups who are underrepresented, overlooked and
misunderstood.

Dylan B Jones spoke to WOOF’s producer Chiyo about the relationship

between queerness and society’s idea of what constitutes “sexy”, AND
how all that relates to our city’s nuanced sociopolitical structures.

Hey Chiyo! Tell us about WOOF.

As someone who is a QTPOC [queer trans person of colour], but also an
immigrant, a drag prinx (as opposed to queen), and someone who faces
everyday misogyny, I’m forced to really think about how much space cis white
gay men take up in a “community” that claims to be for all. Inspired by platforms
like The Cocoa Butter Club, LADS, and Artists who were paving their own way,
I decided it was time to have a cabaret night that vowed to platform identities
who, in our mere existence, are redefining what it means to be sexy. The folk on
our stages are never the forms plastered as desirable all over the media growing
up - especially queer media.

One of WOOF’s goals is to “redefine sexy” - what do you think

society views as “sexy”?
In the LGBTQIA+ community, you need to be palatable. Even as a gender
non-conforming transboy, I have been made aware on multiple occasions
that sometimes I am only the token trans person because I am thin and toned.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter that I have a toned physique, because I’m too dark.
Or I don’t pass enough. Sometime being pre-surgery and not fitting their mould
of transitioning is what ruins it. Sometimes I’m not masc enough. The point is, to
be desirable and to be trans, or to be desirable and to be a POC, or disabled, or
femme, or a womxn, or an immigrant, you need to be palatable to those who still
hold powerful space in this community – the cis gay white man. At WOOF, we do
not condone that shit. We only platform bodies who have never fit the cookie-
cutter mould of what it meant to be sexy. We control our own desirability. Our
lineups have included icons like Travis Alabanza, Rhys’ Pieces, Sadie Sinner,
Lily Snatchdragon, and Rubyyy Jones. We put the marginalised to the forefront
and have sold out every single show.

What do you think of the queer and POC communities’ relationship

to sex and sexiness?
I can’t really speak for the entirety of POC - we’re all from different cultures

 and backgrounds. Just like LGBTQIA+ folk, POC are not immune from being
assholes and ignorant towards sex/what it means to be sexy just because we’re
POC. However, I do feel many POC are more sexually open due to resonating
with the experience of knowing you may be a crossed out preference to white
folk. We know the “no Blacks, no Asians” mentality within the gay community is
alive and well. Usually when a POC follows the same toxic ideologies, it’s due to
the internalised racism we have been taught by our White world. I don’t think the
issue of orthodox gay desirability in Britain and beyond lies with POC, but rather
with the Western standards of what it means to be a both Queer and desirable. It

Finally - what’s next for WOOF?

WOOF pops up whenever I feel like
it’s time for another WOOF. We’re
all out here trying to hustle, and
I’m really blessed to be navigating
the cabaret community at a healthy
pace. I like the idea of WOOF being
a rare gem that pops up once every
few months. This year we’ve taken
over DragWorld, the Southbank
Terrace with Pecs, and I even did
a special event with it in Ljubljana,
Slovenia. Our independent shows,
always at the RVT, have sold
out every time. The people want
diversity. It’s time we take up more
space. Hopefully next year we are
bigger and better. In the mean time,
the UK Queer population needs to
support the movement and follow me
on social media (lol). If WOOF goes
on hiatus for the beginning of 2020,
it is actually a cause for celebration.

Cabaret. Drag Race UK:

Shantay You Can Stay, Dear.
I’ve been putting off writing about Drag Race UK, not because I’m apathetic
towards it but because I had a sense there would be wall-to-wall articles
from people who are miraculously all of a sudden experts on drag, and I
wasn’t wrong. So far that reason - and because I’m enjoying this first season
so far - here I am with my thoughts.
BBC / World of Wonder
First off, the girls are all beautiful, talented and brave. Some of them are very
familiar to me, going back almost a decade, and I’ve sat on judging panels
in front of them admiring their work. I think we can all agree that we’re proud
of what they’re achieving right now and how positively they’re representing
LGBTQ+ cabaret, in spite of our respective reservations about the show.
Because I didn’t set my expectations high I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how
many standout moments there have been: the beautiful bond between Sum Ting
Wong and Vinegar Strokes (both should have remained in the competition longer;
Vinegar brought so much heart), Divina De Campo nailing every single runway
look, The Vivienne as Donald Trump and Pete Burns, “take it to the hodgepodge,
hodgepodge”, Sum Ting as HRH The Queen on an actual stamp, Jade Thirlwall
as a judge, “overconfidence is not cute”, Baga Chipz in Downtown Draggy,
“who put 50p in Cheryl”, Divina’s maniacal laugh, The Vivienne’s veneerers, Sir
David Attenborough in Snatch Game (!!), Baga dropping a dramatic ‘dear’ into
conversations, Cheryl casually wearing her wigs in the workroom in boy mode,
Crystal using an angle grinder on her crotch as Geri looked on like a horrified Daily
Mail reader from the shires and THE FROCK DESTROYERS!
But my absolute favourite (comedy) moments have been RuPaul trying to
decipher the British slang - the bemused expressions as Cheryl talks about
shitting her knickers or something. The thing is, they seem to think us Brits drink
tea 24/7, talk exclusively in Cockney rhyming slang and curtsy to Her Maj when
in fact we obsess over the Cock Destroyers, swear like troopers and are now
teaching the world what camp really is.
When the show was first announced many people were concerned
that it would be lacking in British flair. But it’s transpired to be quite the
opposite. Quintessential bawdy British humour has shone throughout. These
big characters have taken their finely crafted gay wit and sensibilities from the

stages of pubs and clubs to the largest broadcaster in the world. Incredible, and
wonderful. As Baga would say: “That’s what you call campness, dear.”
Following the girl band episode - which by the way is definitely one of THE best
episodes of any Drag Race ever - the Frock Destroyers (Baga, Blu, Divina) made
history by being the first drag group to score a UK chart hit. It was sitting at
number 3 in the iTunes chart at one point. This is a major milestone for UK drag,
and the show. Could it be that Drag Race UK is already being received better
than its US counterpart, or is this just the honeymoon period? Expectations will
now be higher than ever for future seasons.
Amongst all the challenges and successes, it’s worth noting the social issues
that the show has touched upon. Many of which have been articulated rather
beautifully by Divina De Campo. Maybe we should just make Divina Prime
Minister and not bother with all this general election nonsense? The segments
about section 28 and growing up gay ‘back in the day’ hit home with me,
and I’m glad they were spoken about to a large audience because straight
people and young LGBTQ+ people need to hear it. And those that do know,
mustn’t forget because the mistakes of the past can quite easily be replicated
through complacency...and letting the country slip into the hands of a far-right
government for five more years.
Drag Race UK has proven its critics wrong. It’s a huge hit, but it’s far from
perfect as a representation of LGBTQ+ UK drag in 2019.
The foundations have now been laid and I hope they decide to listen to us who
work in this great industry and open the show up to everyone, no matter how they
identify. Coming off the back of such a successful first season would be the ideal
time for RuPaul to make history again and show that she truly stands with everyone
in the LGBTQ+ community. Then the sky will be the limit for Drag Race UK.
