Introduction: On Thursday 19th December, 2019, all Nigerian cadets of Marine Engineering
visited the Egyptian Ship Repairs and Building Company (ESRBC). We went by 10am.

Historical Background of the Shipyard.

Egyptian Ship Repairs and Building Company (ESRBC) was founded 1924. It is one of the largest
and most experience shipyard in the region. It is located at Elgomrok District, Port gate No.1 -
Alexandria, Egypt.

Purpose of the Visit: The purpose of this visit was to be acquainted with the shipyard, check the
facilities and be conversant with how various equipment for ship building and repair are operated.

SECTIONS VISITED DURING THE TRIP

1) The Plasma Cutting Workshop: This workshop contained two sets of Computer
Numerical Control (CNC) Machine for cutting of steel sheets/plating used in ship building
and repairs. Plasma cutting workshops for hull plating is done by a CNC machine which
uses oxygen as for its plasma cutting technology.

Computerized data of thickness of the sheet, dimensions and number of sheets to be cut are
fed to the CNC machine by the ship building design office. The operator’s job is just to
control the machine. There are various sizes of thickness of the plates.
2) Boat building workshop: This section contained a workshop where ship building takes
places round the clock
on a 24 hour cylcee.
They build military
gun boats. The bottom
of the gunboat is made
of steel, while parts of
the hull and super
structure is from
aluminum. Before they
finish building, they
perform different kind
of tests on the boat to
ensure all the welding
are good. Which are
the 3 dye spray test for
welding cracks.

3) Mechanical Slipway: This is a large machine which has a 600-ton capacity. It has a rail
for pulling up and letting down the ship.

4) The Floating Dock: It

has a carrier which
submerges into the
water to bring up the
ship afloat for
maintenance and
repair operations to be
carried out.
5) Boat Lift: The boat lift is used in
carrying small boats and tug boats
from the water unto a rail for
maintenance and repair.

6) Floating Crane: This is a kind of crane that is

self-floating and self-steering on water. It lifts
things floating on the water unto cranes and
ships.

7) The Hull Repair Section: This section contains

various divisions for general ship hull repair and
maintenance. They include:
 Propeller adjustment and coating section
 The hull sandblasting section
 Rudder stock repair and refurbishment

Reflections and Observations: The visit was interesting and educating. We saw how the ships
were being build, maintenance procedures. I also learnt about future career job opportunities.
