Engineering Graphics & Drawing

Lab Manual # 5 (Introduction to AutoCAD)
Regd. #: Insert Registration Number here

Introduction:
This lab session will be the last one in the series of ‘Introduction’. Students shall learn few more modify
tools and ways to insert and format text on AutoCAD workspace. The lab manual will at the end
introduce the concept of layering in AutoCAD to the students. After this lab session, students shall be
given various practice tasks and they will be encouraged to practice as much as possible till the end of the
semester.

Equipment Required:
A PC/Laptop with AutoCAD 2012 installed on it.

CLO Covered:
CLO5: Produce intermediately complex engineering drawings using CAD tool.

Instructions:

1. Open AutoCAD 2012 by double clicking on its icon situated somewhere on the desktop.

2. Chamfer Tool: This tool may be activated by clicking its icon on the ‘modify’ toolbar or by
selecting it from the ‘Modify’ menu or by entering keyboard shortcut ‘cha’ and pressing
spacebar. This tool is used to add the feature of Chamfering in our drawings. A user may apply
chamfering by either defining distance of chamfering on two corner lines or by providing distance
on one and angle of chamfer.

Chamfering and Filleting: These two features are safety features. Chamfering
and Filleting is done to turn the sharp edges and corners into smooth ones so
that they may not cause any injury. Whether we choose to chamfer or fillet a
particular corner depends on various aspects, such as cost, time requirement,
stress concentrations, wear resistance etc.

Some associated terminologies have been represented in the following

figures:

3. Fillet Tool: This tool may be activated by clicking its icon on the ‘Modify’ toolbar or by
selecting it from the ‘Modify’ menu or by entering keyboard shortcut ‘f’ and pressing spacebar.
This tool is used to add the feature of Filleting in our drawings. User has to specify the radius of
fillet and the two lines making a corner. Using this information AutoCAD will generate a fillet at
the specified corner.

4. Multi-Line Text: This tool may be activated by clicking its icon on the ‘Draw’ toolbar or by
selecting it from the ‘Draw  Text’ menu or by entering keyboard shortcut ‘mt’ and pressing
spacebar. Once the tool is activated the user may draw a rectangle in which text may be added.
Like any other text editing environment, user may enter and edit/format the text.

5. Hatch: This tool may be activated by clicking its icon on the ‘Draw’ toolbar or by selecting it
from the ‘Draw’ menu or by entering keyboard shortcut ‘h’ and pressing spacebar. As soon as the
tool is activated a window will appear allowing user to select and format the hatch pattern.

User may use ‘Type and Pattern’ and ‘Angle and Scale’ portions to format the type of Hatch.
From the portion of ‘Boundaries’ user may opt an option for defining the Hatch area. ‘Pick
Points’ option will allow the user to select a point inside a closed object so that hatch may be
applied to that closed object. ‘Select Objects’ option requires the user to select the closed
object(s) in which hatch is to applied.
Hatching is used mostly for displaying the cross-sections of the engineering part.

6. Layers: Like many other image editors AutoCAD also provide a provision of using layers.
Layers, keeping our understanding shallow, provides us with different type of pencils/pens for
drawing purpose. For example, Layer 1 may have a red hidden line, while layer 2 may have a
yellow continuous line. Apart from changing the line type, thickness and color, the Layer
Properties Manager allows the user to turn ON/OFF, Lock/Unlock etc. a certain layer. Other
advanced options provided for layer control are beyond the scope of this course.
A user may open the Layer Properties Manager by clicking on its icon or by selecting Layer from
Format menu or by typing Layer (Keyboard Shortcut = La) and pressing spacebar or Enter.

In this window user may create a New layer, delete an old layer or set any layer as current so that
whatever is drawn afterwards uses the current layer for drawing.
The Layer Toolbar allows for quick management and transition between layers.

The first icon from the left is for Layer Properties Manager. After it the drop down menu lists all
the created layers. Selecting any layer from the drop down menu will set that layer as ‘current’. In
the drop down menu, the first icon (a bulb) is for turning a layer ON/OFF. If turned OFF,
everything drawn using that particular layer will not be shown in the workspace. The forth icon (a
lock) is used to Lock/Unlock a layer. If locked, anything drawn using that particular layer will be
un-editable, although the objects may be used for snaps.
Note 1: Line Weights are not seen changing in the workspace because displaying varying line
weights has been disabled for achieving increased performance. A user may turn this option on by
going to the Line Weight settings. These settings are available in Format menu.
Note 2: Dimensioning style will also change to reflect the style used by the layer. If a user wishes
to use some other format of the dimensioning, then it must be modified as explained in the
previous lab session.

Tasks:
Attempt the following tasks and insert only the required answer in the given field. Insert figures wherever
demanded.

Question # 1: Reproduce the following drawing on AutoCAD. You should place dimensions and
labelling text as well. Use suitable approximations of the dimensions that you think are missing.

Question # 2: Draw the drawing of a Filter Top with all dimensions placed as shown in the figure. After
drawing, insert the figure in the given field.

Students are advised to fill the manual and email it before the upcoming lab. At the end of the semester, a
lab report will be demanded which should contain all lab manuals.
Kindly rename the file as ‘MCT-111_EGD_2019_LM5_XX’, where XX is your roll number. After filling the
file, email it to qa.masud@uet.edu.pk, having subject exactly same as the file name.
