1.0 PURPOSE

The Intent of this procedure is to illustrate the methodology for surface


preparation by abrasive blasting and application of primer and paints as per
applicable codes & specification.

2.0 SCOPE

Abrasive blasting and painting of exterior surfaces of Derrick flare lines, skids,
and pressure vessels, piping & related piping support structures.

4.0 METHOD

 Machined and threaded surfaces shall be protected with


suitable rust preventive.
 All sharp surface projections and weld spatters shall be
removed suitably from the surfaces to be blast cleaned.
 After blasting areas to be welded subsequent to coating shall
be marked to a distance of 75mm to 100mm from the weld
areas prior to coating.
 All surfaces to be painted shall be blast cleaned. The blasted
surface shall be pressure air cleaned. The anchor pattern of
blasted surface shall be checked and recorded. It shall not be
more than 200 microns and less than 50 microns.
 Any oil, grease, dust or foreign matter if deposited on the
surface after the surface preparation shall be removed prior to
painting.
 All ingredients in any container shall be thoroughly mixed
before use to a smooth and uniform consistency. Mechanical
agitation during application shall be used to keep pigment in
the solution.
 All paints shall be stirred up thoroughly prior to and during the
application. The containers shall be rolled to and fro on a level
ground prior to opening. If on opening any sedimentation is
observed the contents shall be rejected.
 Manufacturer recommendations shall be followed in mixing,
thinning and storage of the paint materials along with safety
precautions.

 Primer or first coat of paint shall be applied within 1/2 Hrs. of


surface preparation.
 Primer/paint shall be applied by brush or spray as suitable.
 Application of paint coats shall not be carried out under the
following conditions.
a) When the ambient temperature is below 5 Deg. C
b) When the ambient temperature is more than 45 Deg. C
c) During adverse weather conditions
d) If relative humidity exceeds 80%
 No coat shall be applied until the preceding coat has dried.
Forced drying of the paint shall not be allowed which causes
cracking & wrinkling. No drier shall be added to paint on the
job unless specifically allowed in the manufacturer’s
specification.
 If paint surface has been damaged in handling, all damaged
paint shall be removed thoroughly and designated number of
primer and finish coat shall be applied to the thickness
specified.
 Protective coating system will be used as per the specification
as detailed below.
 Dry Film Thickness of the coating shall be checked after final
coating and the thickness for the same shall be as per
Specification and the same shall be recorded as per Format.

NOTE: In case of any conflict between the requirements of this procedure and that of
above referred specification then requirements of MECON shall govern.
