TEACHING TECHNIQUES

IN TEACHING BAHASA INDONESIA TO FOREIGN LEARNER

Technique is a procedure or skill for completing a specific task. Teachers


all over have systems of rewards/punishments for students who comply and
exceed or defy and lag behind. If a classroom is becoming distracted a teacher
may use the technique of silent reading or shared reading to try to rope them in
again. Another may choose to use a quick physical activity to distract their
distraction and get them all to do the same thing at the same time - then quickly
direct them back to work.
These are some teaching techniques in teaching Bahasa Indonesia to
Foreign Learner, such as:
I. GRAMMAR-TRANSLATION METHOD
Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) is a foreign language
teaching methodology derived from classical methods (sometimes called
traditional) method in teaching. In this method, the teachers usually have
the students to translate whole texts word by word and memorize
grammatical rules and exceptions as well as sets of words. This method
relies on the activity of reading and translating text.
Larsen-Freeman (1986) provides some typical techniques
associated with the Grammar-Translation Method:
1. Translation. The students are instructed to translate a text on
target language to their native language.
2. Reading comprehension. The students need to answer some
questions and find some information based on the text they are
learning.
3. Antonyms and synonyms. The students are instructed to find
the antonyms or synonyms of a set of words.
4. Fill in the gaps. The teacher provides incomplete sentences
and the students are instructed to fill in the gaps with the words
or terms they have just learnt.

5. Memorization. The students memorize a set of new


vocabularies or grammatical rules.
6. Use words in sentences. Students need to create sentences to
define or describe the words or terms they have just learnt.
II. DIRECT METHOD
Direct method uses to facilitate participants learning process for example
in arranging sentences. The teacher closely monitored participant’s
performances one by one.
III. AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD
Audio Lingual Method is the method which focuses in repetition some
words to memorize. This method is a method which use drills and pattern
practice in teaching language. There are some techniques in using Audio
Lingual Method, such as: dialog memorization, backward build-up drill,
repetition drill, chain drill, single slot substitution, multiple slot
substitution drill, transformational drill, question and answer drill, and
grammar game.
IV. THINK-PAIR-SHARE
Think Pair Share use to pair participants to think of an issue then to pair
each of them. In the end, each of them shared their learning experiences.
V. ROLE PLAY
Role play is method use to engage participants and practice short
Indonesian conversation.

Besides, the teacher also applied several ice breakers and energizers to
stimulate participants’ motivation and spirit in the learning process. There are
three ice breakers/energizers such as BIPA-KBRI-Sudan, Double-double this that,
Dum-Dum dada.
Not only that, the teacher also presented Indonesian children song such as
“Topi Saya Bundar” (My hat is round) and “Balonku ada lima” (I have 5
balloons). Both songs aimed to introduce colors and shapes in Indonesian
language.
