How to attempt an argumentative essay:
you should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Machine translation (MT) is slower and less accurate than

human translation and there is no immediate or predictable
likelihood of machines taking over this role from humans.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Ground Work:

Scope: Translation – machines (not better) – humans (better)

Stand: partially agree

Reasons for agreement:

1. Machines cannot catch the contextual meanings

2. They cannot decide whether to take primary or secondary meaning of a word while translating

3. The tone of the speaker is also important while translating a speech

Nowadays, many efforts are being made to make machines perform human intellectual tasks.

Detailed Background Statement:

This is evident in our attempts to make machines translate human speeches.

Thesis:

I completely agree to the assumption that machines will not substitute humans with regard to
translation.

Outline:

My point of view is going to be reinforced with a few reasons and relevant examples in the coming
paragraphs.
BODY OF THE ESSAY:

REASON ONE FOR AGREEMENT:

In fact, technically speaking, translation of speech does not mean translating word to word in isolation
but it is beyond that. Words do not carry their literal meaning always, they get a different meaning as
per the context. It is not possible for a machine to understand the intended meaning of a word as it is
spoken by the speaker. Moreover, as there are primary and secondary meanings to most of the words in
many languages – a word may mean ‘x’ when it is used as a noun while it carries altogether a different
meaning when it is used as a verb – we cannot expect a machine to pick the right sense of a word.

Example:

For instance, if the speaker used the word “pedestrian” as an adjective to mean dull or lacking
imagination while sullying a politician, it is mostly likely for a machine to translate it as a noun which
means ‘walker’ as a result the entire speech may get spoiled.

REASON TWO FOR AGREEMENT:

In addition, the tone of the speaker plays a vital role in conveying the meaning of a sentence.
sometimes, speakers may use irony while expressing their acrimony about certain unwelcomed
decisions made by the government. In such case, machine cannot comprehend the intended meaning of
the speaker. Thus, its effort to translate becomes futile.

Example:

As a case in point, if the speaker makes a statement ironically that the world has made a tremendous
progress in the field of communication technology that members of a family do not talk to one another
in spite of being under the same roof. A machine takes the literal meaning while translating and makes
the desired meaning upside down as it cannot grasp the irony of the speaker.

After a meticulous analysis of a few reasons (whether machines can take over this human’s role)

RESTATEMENT OF THESIS:

I personally believe that it is not practically possible for machines to translate human speech as it needs
shrewdness and life.
