The standard operating procedure for breastfeeding recommends that mothers breastfeed their infants as soon as possible after delivery to take advantage of the infant's strong sucking reflex in the first hour. Mothers should be encouraged to try different positions to find the most comfortable one and feed the infant every 2-4 hours or on demand. Removing the infant from the breast correctly by breaking the suction with a finger will prevent nipple soreness.
