Feed the birds!

Take a moment today to show some love for birds by setting out
food for them. “Bird feeding is thrilling because you never know

SATURDAY JANUARY 11 NATIONAL HOT TODDY DAY

Warm up!
The most delicious way to warm up on a chilly day?
Sipping a warming cocktail! And our current favorite
is this sweet tea–spiked hot toddy from Kate Wood
of TheWoodAndSpoon.com. “It’s a great Southern
spin on the classic cocktail,” she says.
To make Wood’s Sweet Tea Hot Toddy: In a
small saucepan, heat 3 ⁄4 cup of sweet tea (homemade or
store-bought, like Red Diamond) in a small saucepan on
the stove until hot. Bring barely to a boil, then carefully
pour into a glass. Add 1 cinnamon stick, 1 lemon slice
and 1 tsp. of honey. Allow mixture to cool for 5 minutes,
then stir in 11 ⁄2 oz. of bourbon and enjoy. Makes 1 drink

COZY CANDLESCAPE
“A low bowl filled with candles
and fragrant extras adds instant
warmth and ambience,” says
interior designer Mark Cutler.
“Plus, it can be made last-

salt to the base of a bowl. Then
twist floral wire into curled
shapes and wrap around six
battery-run pillar candles.
Nestle the pillars into the sand.
Surround with fresh pine snip-

FRAGRANT CHAIR FLAIR

“It’s always a sweet surprise when there’s a
little holiday decoration, like a nosegay, at
each guest’s seat,” says Palmisano. To do:
For each, pinch together a few pine snippets
(gathered from the backyard); wrap the ends
with a rubber band to secure. Next, paint a
craft-store wood star gold and let dry, then
thread onto a length of festive ribbon. Slip
three mini gold ornaments onto the ribbon,
then knot it around the rubber band. Use
thin ribbon or an ornament hook to hang the
nosegay on a chairback at the dinner table.

HOLIDAY-HAPPY ‘LANTERNS’
“This glowing display brings bright color and
sparkle to any surface,” says Cutler. “The
best part? It’s super easy to toss together
yet still offers a sophisticated look.” To do:
Place tall, battery-operated votive candles in
large glass vases. Fill each vase with hand-
fuls of small- and medium-sized ornaments
in gold and pink. Explains Cutler, “The pil-
lars magnify the ornaments’ shine and add
height to your table.”

Readers share little reminders of how much
goodness there is in the world

“I LEFT THE TRAINING WITH A

BRAND-NEW FRIEND!”
I had to travel to California to attend training
for a new job. There were 80 of us from all around
the country. Not knowing anyone, I wondered how I
would spend my downtime. On the first day, another
trainee, Cecile, suggested we all go to an exhibit in
Beverly Hills. We would meet in the hotel lobby and ride-share
there. I ended up being the last to arrive, and all the cars were full.
So I wouldn’t be alone, Cecile left her car to ride with me. We
shared stories and laughed the whole way. I not only left the train-
ing with a wealth of information, but also a brand-new friend!
—Gina Borgesi, Drexel Hill, PA

“THEY FILLED MY LIFE

WITH KINDNESSES!”
Recently, I needed to be in a
cast for several weeks to allow
my foot to heal. During that time,
I couldn’t drive and had to use a walker to
keep the weight off my foot. My friends filled
my life with kindnesses! One friend took me
to church. Another took me shopping. A neighbor brought me taxi
tickets, which I used to take trips to the senior center. What could
have been a long stretch at home alone was made better by their
kindnesses. I hope to pay their good deeds forward.
—Claire Thorpe, Jefferson, WI

“IT WARMS MY HEART TO THINK OF

EACH PERSON WHO HELPED!”
It was a cold, snowy night when I stopped
to buy a lottery ticket. When I returned to
my car, I inserted the key in the door lock—and it got
stuck. Two ladies tried to help, then went and got the
store owners. When they couldn’t remove the key, they
escorted me inside to warm up with some coffee. AAA was very
busy, so the owners drove me home. The next day, the florist near
where my car was left kept an eye on it and held my key after AAA
got it out. It warms my heart to think of each person who helped!
