HELPING VERBS

WILL
Will is used when we talk about the future-to say what we
believe will happen.
To talk about what people want to do or are willing to do.
To make promises and offers.

EXAMPLES:
-We will be late.
-We will have to take the train.
-I will give you a lift home after the party.
-We will come and see you next week.
-We will see you tomorrow.
-She will study harder for the next exam.
-I think the elections will have a shocking result.
-If you panic, she will be frightened.
-One day he will know.
-Things will get better.

WOULD
Would is a past tense of will.
The word would is used for unreal or imagined situations.
Sentence like “Would you like to” make polite offer.

EXAMPLES:
-Andrew said he would be late.
-I would love to visit Newyork.
-If I were the president of the company, I would make a
lot of changes.
-She would travel around the world if she had more
vacation time.
-Would you like anything to drink?
-Would you like to see some pictures from my vacations?
-You would lose weight if you took more exercise.
-If he got a new job he would probably make more
money.
-What if he lost his job. what would happen then?
-Dan would help you if you asked him.

SHALL
The traditional rule is that shall is used with first person
pronouns i.e I and We to form future tense.
Shall can be used with second and third person pronouns
to express a command.
Shall is sometimes used with second and third person
pronouns to express a threat.

EXAMPLES:
-What shall I make?
-He shall go at once.
-You shall regret this.
-Shall I seat you?
-Shall we review what you have learned?
-Lets take a step back, shall we?
-I shall go when I pleased.
-shall I call our men from beyond the hill? He called out.
-“It shall be done” answered the captain.
-I shall write to her in short time.

CAN
We use can to make a general statements about what is
possible.
We can use can to talk about someone’s skill or general
abilities.
We use can to talk about ability to do something at a
given time in the present or future.
We use can to ask for permission to do something.
We use can to give permission.
We use can to say that someone has permission to do
something.
We use can to make offers.

EXAMPLES:
-It can be very cold in winter.
-She can speak several languages.
-He can swim like a fish.
-Can I ask you a question, please?
-You can go home now if you like.
-You can make a lot of money if you are lucky.
-We can go out whenever we want.
-Students can travel free.
-Can I help you?
-can I do that for you?
