(101 ) what is the need for carrying out boiler water tests.
Answer:- The objectives of boiler water testing are;
To ensure that the treatment is effective and
corrective action applied is taking effect.
To find out if contamination of sea water is
occurring at an early stage even before the
leakage increases to large proportions.
To ensure that reserve qualities like alkalinity and
phosphate reserves are within their limits.
(102) Explain how the thrust block functions.
Answer:- The thrust block is a device to transmit the propeller
thrust to the ships hull so that the ship moves forwards or
backwards in accordance with the engine rotational direction.
The propeller thrust acts through the collar integral
with the shaft on thrust pads, kidney shaped and white metal
lined acting on the block which is fixed firmly to the hull. The
pads are lubricated by forced lubrication thereby reducing the
friction resulting in efficient thrust transmission.
(103) How is the chrome liner on the propeller shaft fitted.
Does it rotate with the shaft or is it fixed on the stern tube.
Answer:- The chrome liner is a sliding fit on the propeller shaft.
It is connected to the propeller boss by a flange and bolted
connection. It turns along with the propeller. The rubber seals
fixed in the seal box rub on the chrome liner and which is
made tight by a garter spring inserted in the lip of the seal and
prevent leakage of the oil as well as prevent ingress of sea
water.

(104) One unit of the main engine is is exhibiting high exhaust
temperature. What are the reasons and their rectifications.
Answer:- The first action is to confirm if the temperature shown
on the thermometer or pyrometer is correct. This can be done
by exchanging the thermometers or the pyrometers.
UIf it is confirmed that the thermometers or
pyrometers are not defective, then the temperature recoeded is
true. If the temperature is higher by 500- 750 C , then the fault is
in the fuel injector or the setting of the fuel pump and mostly
it will be a defective fuel injector which can be removed,
tested and renewed by a stand by injector if it is defective.
If on the other hand the temperature is more than 5000C it
means the exhaust valve is leaking.( The exhaust temperature is
measured after the exhaust valve and the highest temperature
occurs during combustion. If the valve is leaking , it will sense
this high temperature.) . The exhaust valve will require to be
renewed by a stand by exhaust valve.
(105) Give the main specifications of the main engine of your
last ship you sailed on and also the specifications of the
lubricants used in the main engine and auxiliary engines.
