in my life. They are some of my
favourite people; some of my smartest,
funniest, most talented and generally
wonderful friends. But they also drive
me mad, although I’m sure I’m guilty
too, with some of the poor decisions
I’ve made in my time. For starters, I’d
oicially like to apologise to all of my
loved ones for at least seven months of
2009, as well as March to May of 2013.
Since we’re on the topic, I’m aware
that I didn’t make the best decisions
last January. I’m also sorry for every
time I’ve broken up with a boyfriend,
let you slag him of to me, and then
got back with him. I’m the most
sorry for doing that.
Anyway, I digress.
It feels as though people are
guiltiest of not taking the advice they
seek when it comes to relationships.
Some of us push the line much
further than we’d normally deem
acceptable in the name of love. When
someone is miserable at work, they

Think you know everything about the world’s best-
known sister act? Then you’ve clearly not read this totally
eye-opening interview with THE KARDASHIANS
Family portraits are never an easy thing to
master. There’s always the giddy younger
sibling who won’t play ball. Or the surly,
skulking middle child who wants no part
in such scenes of contrived familial bliss.
There’ll be an imperious elder, too, and an
impatient matriarch, and someone will always,
always end up with their eyes closed. But
when that family is The Kardashians? Well,
cast your eyes right and you get the idea…
These are, after all, the world’s most
photographed sisters; women whose faces peer
back at us from tabloids, TV screens, phones
and billboards every day of the week. We are
as familiar with their lives as we are with our
own family members. Seriously, log onto any
celebrity news site at any hour of the day and
you can essentially get a real-time feed on their
lives and movements. But behind the cameras,
what are they really like? How do they see one
another and do they really think Kim takes
too many selfies? C’mon, we had to ask… i

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES

Ever rolled your eyes at the expression,
‘It’s not what you know, but who’? Well, a
new study from the University of California
confirms that it’s true – with women
benefiting more than men from rubbing
shoulders with the top dogs. How to find
a mentor that’s mutually beneficial? (And
no, not in that sense…) Penny Davenport,
business coach and career mentor,
recommends the ‘Plus 10’ method: identify
the person whose career you want in 10
years’ time. Ask yourself what you can do
for them before making your approach. Fun
fact: most senior members of management
respond well to technical support and tea.

a new initiative from London fitness studio 1Rebel. ‘This is the only type of couples therapy you need,’ its website
declares. ‘Blood, sweat and tears, with your nearest and dearest.’ It could have a point: research by Virgin Active
found that 64% of women who exercise with someone else rather than alone push themselves harder and burn
a sixth more calories. And the Journal Of Personality And Social Psychology reported that couples who engage in
physical challenges together feel more satisfied with their relationships. Just avoid matching gym gear, please…

was a new beginning, and I’d also had time to grow into myself.
I’d accepted I was never going to look like Elle Macpherson.
My upbringing helped. There are a lot of strong women in
my family – my mum, aunties, grandma and cousins – and they
always enforced a, ‘Don’t be thinner, be healthier,’ mantra. They
never made me feel under pressure to adhere to a certain look,
and I realised being diferent isn’t such a bad thing.
As a result, I’ve been body-confident most of my life, and it’s
refreshing. I never hide when I’m changing at the gym or getting
ready for a night out with friends. It’s a shame when people
think they have to cover up; it shows they have low self-esteem.
I try to be a good role model for my younger half-siblings
too. I want them to know you don’t need to worry about the
way you look. Today, it’s so easy to agonise over yourself,
especially comparing yourself with other women on
Instagram. But there’s no point doing that or striving for
‘perfection’, because in my opinion ‘perfect’ doesn’t exist.
You’re already your own amazing self.

removed from various WhatsApp

soon realised she was being cast out
from social gatherings too. “I started
noticing pictures on Facebook of my
colleagues on nights out. I just hadn’t
been invited,” she recalls.
As well as being confused and hurt,
it was the humiliation that smacked
the hardest. “I felt like a five-year-old

hopscotch with the other kids in the
school playground. But the worst
thing was that this was all happening
on a public forum, and others could
see my pain simply by scrolling

Things came to a head when Laura
discovered (via some not-so-subtle
Facebook posts) that she hadn’t been

SAVE US FROM OURSELVES

When changes are rolled out on Facebook, you hear a collective groan the world over – because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,
right? But the latest tweak looks set to break the pattern. Knowing 88% of Facebook users stalk their exes on the site (and
with research revealing that doing so can make a break-up even more distressing), the clever clogs at Mark Zuckerberg HQ are
trying to help. Currently being trialled in the US, a change in status to ‘single’ prompts Facebook to ask users if they want to
see less of their ex’s posts or limit what the ex sees of theirs. Users can un-tag themselves from posts with former partners,
and edit who sees (or doesn’t see) posts with an ex (eg, that fit guy at the gym you friend-requested). These tools are set to
be introduced over here, and as far as we’re concerned, the sooner the better. Sometimes, willpower alone just isn’t enough.

Monica and
Omar in 2012

‘He said he wanted to kiss me’

Monica Kaur, 23, is a science technician from London

I was introduced to Omar at a university ‘meet-

and-greet’ for freshers. I was 18; he was the year
above and we were on the same biomedical
sciences course. He wasn’t particularly flirty that
night, but we chatted for ages and I liked the attention.
Ater about a week or so we were definitely an item – and
spent so much time together he became an unoicial
flatmate. We ended up dating for two and a half years.
Omar was incredibly romantic – he’d give me a love letter
on each monthly anniversary. I’ve still got them in my
‘Momar’ box. He was the first boyfriend I really loved. But

a Sikh guy (Omar is from a Muslim background). It took
a while for me to talk to my mum about relationships,
but she’s slowly getting used to the idea of me dating.
When I moved home in my third year of uni, our
relationship disintegrated. I spent a lot of time with my
family and I went from seeing Omar every day to barely
at all. Eventually, we broke up. I’ve had a couple of
relationships since, but nobody really measured up to him.
I was intrigued to catch up, and to talk about what
happened. It was great to see Omar, but we came to the
conclusion we’d been at diferent points in our lives – and
still are. Later, he told me he

‘I still think the world of her’

Omar Khalil, 24, is a PR news editor from London

I fancied Monica from the start. We just clicked.

Our first proper date was at Nando’s, though –
hardly romantic! She was a fantastic girlfriend –
funny and down-to-earth – and the only one
I’ve introduced to my parents. They still ask about her.
Living down the road from Monica at uni meant we saw
each other all the time. But because her parents are from a
traditional Sikh background, we kept things quiet so as not
to upset anyone. I was introduced to her mum as a ‘friend’.
When Monica wasn’t living at home, things were great,
but ater she moved back, we hardly saw each other. I was
going through a rough patch at the time. I had nowhere
to live, a demanding full-time job and exam pressures.
Monica couldn’t be there for me. That’s no reflection on
her – she’s one of the most caring people I know – it just
wasn’t possible. It was better for our sanity that we broke
up, but although I initiated it, I was still heartbroken.
It was four months before I felt ready to date again,
and nothing since has lasted longer than three months.
Now, as soon as there’s some attachment, I run away.
I hoped when Monica and I met for dinner we’d talk
about our break-up – for me, there’s always been an
element of ‘what if’. But ater talking to her, I realised we
wouldn’t have worked out. Our lifestyles are too diferent.
I still fancy Monica and

Molten cheese, sandwiched

more perfect than an artfully

yes – being one of the scientists
whose job it is to find out how
to make it. That’s right, the
American Chemical Society
actually set out to find the best
cheese to use for the job.
Turns out it’s the calcium in
cheese that helps bond it

the calcium “ditches its job”.

The ACS found that the

optimum pH level of cheese
for the taste is between 5.3

sort of lava-like consistency
we fantasise about. Manchego,
Gouda and Gruyère are the
way to go (or a trusty Cheddar
if all else fails). Just one word
of advice: use napkins. Lots of

AFRAID TO LAUGH, SNEEZE OR RUN?
Many of us are prone to a bit of leakage, when we laugh, cough or jump – we put up with it as a fact
of life, spending money every week on pads, but do we need to?
Urinary stress incontinence afects millions of women in the UK. For some it is a minor inconvenience,
for others it can grow into a life-controlling condition. The good news is that, in most cases, it is easily
self-treatable in the privacy of your own home.
Stress incontinence is caused by a weak pelvic floor, a condition which can be efectively treated by
pelvic floor (or Kegel) exercises, especially if you catch it early. These exercises are easy to do, once
you know how, but you do need to make sure you’re doing them correctly.
Help is at hand... you can visit your GP
who can arrange a three month treatment
of ‘supervised pelvic floor muscle
training’, or prescribe a great little device
called the PelvicTonerTM, which you can
use on your own at home and which
clinical trials show to be just as efective.
...or if you really can’t wait, take control
