Course Title: Mechanics of Machines Course Code: ME-318

Semester & Section: 5th Faculty: Mr. Haider Ali
Maximum Marks: 100 Deadline: 14-Jan-2020
Group No. /Student Name: _____________________ Reg. #_________________

PLO-1: Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an
engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PLO-2: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems
reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
PLO-3: Design/Development of Solutions: An ability to design solutions for complex engineering problems and design
systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety,
cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
CLO-1: Understand the concepts of mechanics for the design of a machine element.
CLO-2: Determine the kinematic characteristics of mechanisms such as linkages, cams, gears, governors and unbalance
masses.
CLO-3: Evaluate the suitability of the selected mechanism for given complex engineering problems.
Attribute 1: Preamble: Engineering problems that cannot be resolved without in-depth engineering knowledge.
Attribute 3: Depth of analysis required: Have no obvious solution and require abstract thinking, originality in analysis to
formulate suitable models.
Attribute 4: Depth of knowledge required: Requires research-based knowledge much of which is at, or informed by, the
forefront of the professional discipline and which allows a fundamentals-based, first principles analytical approach.
Attribute 9: Interdependence: Are high-level problems including many component parts or sub-problems.

Problem Statement

Cricket has always been a game being played by most of the younger generation in Pakistan. Players need to practice day and
night in order to improve their bowling as well as batting skills. However, for batsmen, they need to practice for selected
lines and length in order to master a shot or a technique. Whereas seldom bowlers can bowl consistently on one specific line
and length. Therefore, in order to train the batsmen, it is required to have a mechanical system that can throw the ball on a
specific line and length each time. You are required to design a mechanism that can bowl at good length with a speed of
140 km/h on a 22-yard pitch. Each group must give a unique solution to the problem.

a) Understand the mechanism involved in bowling machine. (C-2)

b) Explain the mechanisms being used worldwide for cricket bowling practices. (C-2)
c) Determine the kinematic characteristics of mechanism. (C-3)
d) Evaluate the mechanism based on its practicality. (C-5)

Requirement from Students
The students are required to adhere to the following guidelines and provide the deliverable(s).

 This CEP is a group task. Students are required to formulate the group consisting of 5 members. The group list and
members’ detail should be provided by Class Representative (CR) by 31st December 2019.
 Each group is required to provide a novel mechanism solely for throwing the ball at a speed of 140 km/h only at
good length on a 22-yard cricket pitch.
 Each group has to submit a report which should contain the following components,
o Introduction of mechanisms involved in bowling machines being used worldwide
o A sufficient literature review of not more than 5 related papers
o A schematic diagram with dimensions and kinematic characteristics of all the components involved in the
mechanism
o Analysis of the mechanism based on its use, manufacturing, and cost
o Conclude the report with enough comments on the suitability of the machine compared to others reported in
the literature
 Students will have to work in a group but they also need to understand the project on an individual level.

Assessment Criteria
The assessment of the CEP will be according to the rubrics defined particularly for this CEP. There are three CLOs mapped
with this CEP, therefore, marks distribution as under will be followed,

CLO-1 20%

CLO-2 40%

CLO-3 40%

There will be a report, a viva voce and a quiz related to this CEP. The marks distribution is as under,

Report 50%

Viva 30%

Quiz 20%
