ASSIGNMENT:

POPULATION GROWTH

SUBMITTED BY: IMAN FATIMA

POPULATION GROWTH

DEFINITION:
In biology or human geography, population growth is the increase in the
number of individuals in a population. Global human population growth amounts to
around 83 million annually, or 1.1% per year.

Example: From 1998-2017, the average population growth rate stood at 2.40%. Dramatic social
changes have led to rapid urbanization and the emergence of megacities. During 1990–2003,
Pakistan sustained its historical lead as the second most urbanized nation in South Asia with city
dwellers making up 36% of its population.

FORMULA:
(birth rate + immigration) - (death rate + emigration).

TYPES OG POPULATION GROWTH:

There are two types of population growth.

 Exponential growth
 Logistic growth

1. Exponential Growth:
Exponential growth takes place when a population's per capita growth rate stays the
same, regardless of population size, making the population grow faster and faster as
it gets larger.
2. Logistic Growth:
Logistic population growth occurs when the growth rate decreases as
the population reaches carrying capacity. Carrying capacity is the maximum number
of individuals in a population that the environment can support. When
the population approaches carrying capacity, its growth rate will start to slow.
CAUSES OF POPULATION GROWTH:

Following are the main causes:

 Poverty
 Poor Contraceptive Use.
 Child Labor.
 Reduced Mortality Rates.
 Fertility Treatment.
 Immigration.
 Lack of Water.
 Lower Life Expectancy.

EFFECTS OF POPOLATION GROWTH:

 The problem of overpopulation is hanging like Damocles' sword over our heads.
At the time of independence, the population of West Pakistan was not more than
30 million, which has now reached 170 million—in just 63 years. Pakistan at
present is the sixth most populous country in the world after China, India, the US,
Brazil and Indonesia.
 Pakistan's population is growing at an alarming rate and if it continues
unchecked, it would double by the year 2024 — from 170 million to a whopping
340 million. Even with corresponding increase in resources, we would remain
where we are today, in terms of facilities of healthcare, education, sanitation,
housing, etc.
 We should not forget that even at present, there are 75 million people in this
country without any access to healthcare facilities, 88 million without access to
safe drinking water and 118 million without access to sanitation facilities.
 The sharp rise in population is the mother of all evils in Pakistan. It has given
birth to many problems like poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, fatal diseases,
terrorism, sectarian violence, corruption and environmental degradation.
 The sooner we control further unplanned growth in the population, the better it
would be for the general welfare of the present millions of people of Pakistan.
CONCLUSION:
In biology or human geography, population growth is the increase in the
number of individuals in a population. During 1990–2003, Pakistan sustained its
historical lead as the second most urbanized nation in South Asia with city dwellers
making up 36% of its population. The problem of overpopulation is hanging like
Damocles' sword over our heads. The sharp rise in population is the mother of all
evils in Pakistan.
