Exercise 1: Japanese Tourist Bar Chart – Page 80

The chart illustrates the amount of Japanese journeyer visiting foreign countries
bounded by 1985 and 1995 and the behaviour of the Australian market
corresponding to these travellers during the same decade.

Overall, the number of Japanese visitors increased steadily from 1985 to 1990 rising
approximately to 11 million in this year. After that, 1991 presents a little decrease
while in 1992 the quantity raised again. There were no changes during 1993,
keeping the same number of visitors to finally increment again in the last years of
the decade, ascending to the maximum value of around 15 million in 1995.

Furthermore, according to the information shared by Australia, the percentage of

Japanese people visiting this country had a rapid expansion between 1985 and
1989 experiencing a low decline of nearly 1% in 1990. For the next four subsequent
years, the rate climbed again reaching its higher point in 1994 of about 6.5%.
However, this number lowered 0.5% in 1995.

To sum up, there are more vacationists travelling abroad comparing the beginning
and ending of this period, as well as, the amount of visitors tripping to Australia.

Exercise 2: School Site – Page 81

The maps illustrate the layout of a school in 2004 and the future adjustments it will
suffer by 2024.

Overall, the school expands its size due to the increment in the number of students
from 600 students in 2004 to 1000 students by 2024.

In 2004, the school had two buildings and the sports field was behind the school
building number 1. It was accessed by the main entrance through the path,
passing by the school building number 2. Moreover, there was a unique car park in
front of the main entrance.

By 2024, a road will be open that is going to communicate the main entrance with
a new car park. Besides, there will be a new school building located where the
sports field used to be. Due to this, the sport field will be placed in front of the
second car park. For reaching the new building there will be a shorter passage
from buildings 1 and 2.

To sum up, there will be significant changes in infrastructure and facilities over the
period given that will allow more students to assist this school.

Exercise 3: Hydro-electric power generation – Page 82

The diagram illustrates how electricity is produced by the use of water force and
then distributed for schools, houses, industries and hospitals to use it.

Initially, the sun heats the water. Due to this, evaporation is produced and gaseous
water creates clouds that afterwards, drain the water through rain. The rain water
is stored in a reservoir, built between part of a mountain and an artificial dam.
When the dam is opened a valve is activated by the strength water has when it’s
transported down to the turbine.

Once water reaches the turbine, the flow and force of water produce movement
generate electricity that is transported by high voltage cables and electric towers
up to the transformer station. Water recycles through the pump and gets back to
the reservoir.

At this stage of the process, when the electricity is ready to be used, it’s distributed
by underground cables to houses, industries, hospitals and schools.
