Journey as a Librarian

A librarian is now known as information provider previously it was known as prisoner of

books.
Now work of a librarian is not up to give and take the book back which is known as
circulation of books but now it’s has a wide context to serve the user with its information
seeking behavior such as reference services and referral services.
Information seeking behavior is most common query among user. A librarian must know
what is the information need of user and a librarian must fulfill user requirement by serving the
same. In this context as a school librarian I am always ready for fulfilment of our library users all
learners are taking books at home for 8 days’ issue basis and return it after 8 days. Learners can
reissue books for next 8 days.
In the context of school library, a librarian should give books to learners their age accordingly.
SVM library is having good collection age accordingly.
Example: 1. Shakespeare for all (student friendly series) total 15 titles are available for grade
6 grade and onwards.
2. I can read total 28 books collection is available for grade 3 and 4.
3. Richard Scarry’s titles are available for grade 1.

My name is Ms. Amruta- Librarian at Sarvankash Vidya Mandir, Ratnagiri, I have done
masters in library and information science from University of Pune in 2010. Being a school
librarian I have a much scope for fulfillment of users; as a librarian my job towards the school
users including learners as well as facilitators is to fulfill all their information needs!
I always encourage learners for reading so learner will come again and again in library for
reading purpose. Also train to learners to surf various types of books like from story books to
encyclopedias (and teach them to search for any information from encyclopedias).
To inculcate the reading culture amongst SVMites we have come up with book review system.
Librarian is a trained person having knowledge of serving information to the user. Librarian is
one who definitely give information about the information sources.
Librarian may not be having information of specific subject area but definitely provides from
where it will get.
Example-
1. One who wants information regarding various festivals in India, librarian will provide
sources like ‘Maharashtra Sanskriti Kosha’ or ‘Vishwakosha’
2. Information about sports or sportsman, librarian provides ‘Almanac’ and ‘Year Book’
or ‘World’s Who’s who’ who’s who in India, encyclopedias are also helpful for the
same.
3. For current affairs he would suggest weekly or monthly magazines for detailed
information.
4. Now for each and every information query, Google is ready to serve information but if
above sources are available in library it’s a valuable asset for the user in library.
In order to touch various multiple intelligences, we have initiated digital resource sharing
for learners as well as teachers (sharing of resource link relevant to facilitators, to show
animated stories for early years). Facilitators are very keen to research in their respective areas
of interest. Keeping in mind we have shared various resources as well as online resource for their
betterment.
