Problem Set: Free Fall, Projectile Motion

INSTRUCTIONS: Solve for the unknown quantity in each of the following problems.
Follow the following format.
I. Diagram
II. Given
III. Required
IV. Solution (include equation/s and boxed final answer; round off final answer to
two decimal places)

1. A flower pot falls from a windowsill 5.0 m above the sidewalk.

a. How fast is the flower pot moving when it strikes the ground?
b. How much time does it take for the flower pot to hit the ground?

2. A brick falls freely from a high scaffold and hits the ground after 3.5 seconds. How
high is the scaffold? What is the velocity of the brick just before hitting the ground?

3. The observation deck of a tall skyscraper is 370 m above the street. Determine the
time required for a five-peso coin to free fall from the deck to the street below.

4. A small supply plane flying horizontally at a velocity of 38.5 m/s drops a parcel of
food from a height of 89.0 m to a landing cushion on ground below.
a. How long will it take the parcel to fall from the airplane to the ground?
b. How far in advance of the landing cushion must the parcel be released so
that it lands safely on the cushion?

5. The acceleration due to gravity (g) in the moon is 1.62 m/s2. If a ball is dropped on
the moon from a height of 1.5 m, what is the time for the ball to fall to the surface of
the moon?

6. A soccer ball is kicked at ground level with a speed of 20 m/s at an angle of 45° to
the horizontal. How much later does it hit the ground?

7. A long jumper leaves the ground with an initial velocity of 12.0 m/s at an angle of
28° above the horizontal. Determine the (a) time of flight, (b) horizontal
distance/range covered, and the (c) peak height of the long jumper.
