Ionisation Energy Revision MHW
Ionisation Energy Revision MHW
Summary:
For aluminium, the electron is removed from a p-orbital which has a higher
energy as it is slightly further from the nucleus and it experiences slightly
more shielding.
(note this is the same explanation for the I.E. of Boron being lower than
Beryllium)
Explain why the first ionization energy of sulfur (Z = 16) is less than
that of phosphorus (Z = 15). (2)
(note this is the same explanation for the I.E. of Oxygen being lower than
Nitrogen)
The graph below shows the successive ionisation energies of
potassium.
Estimate the 1st ionisation energy and the 19th ionisation energy of
potassium. Use data from the graph and your calculator. (1)
Explain why the logarithm of the ionisation energy is used in plotting
this graph rather than the ionisation energy. (1)
The large range of numbers is too big to fit onto the graph.
The electrons are being removed from a more positive ion each time.
The electron:proton ration increases e.g.
Na(g) – e- Na+(g)
Na+(g) – e- Na2+(g)
Na2+(g) – e- Na3+(g)
This causes the ionic radius to decrease as there are fewer electrons
and less electron-electron repulsion
There is a greater attraction between the outermost electron and the
nucleus
Explain each of the three sharp rises in the graph.
You should include details of the subshell from which the electron is
removed at each sharp rise. (4)
(Hint: Start by writing out the electronic configuration for potassium)
