OBJECTIVES: 1. To enable the pupils to develop listening comprehension.

SPECIFICATIONS: 1. To give thorough drilling with the help of illustrations to the


structure ‘AS’ and also to enable pupils to make use of it in sentences of their own.
2. To give thorough drilling to the active vocabulary ‘ANCIENT’,
‘DELIGHTED’, and also to make use of them in sentences of their own.
3. To enable the pupils to understand and recall the meaning of passive
vocabulary ‘THRONE’, ‘SUBJECTS’, ‘FORESIGHT’.
4. To enable the pupils recognize the pronunciation and spelling of the
words – ‘HONOURED’, ‘BEYOND’, and ‘ANNOUNCEMENT’.

CONTENT

Long ago there ruled over the kingdom of Hastinapura in the ancient land of Bharata a king
named Shantanu, head of the great Aryan clan of the kurus.His subjects loved and honoured
him as a worthy ruler. They trusted him completely, for they knew him to be wise and
just.When he therefore told their representatives that he was going to name his only son, the
beloved prince Devavrata, heir to his throne,they were delighted beyond words. They received
his announcement with great joy and praised Shantanu for his foresight and good sense.
Preparations were then made for the joyful occasion, and on the chosen day, the young prince
was named heir to Hastinapura’ throne.
