 directly quote, paraphrase, summarize


 signal phrase – “McCullough describes… (18).”
What is a signal phrase?  author’s name in parenthesis – “Addams… (McCullough 18).”
 work w/o page numbers “Studies… (“Hearing the Music”).”

 paraphrasing- shorter than the original and put into your own words
 quotations – must be identical to the source
Why would one use a source?  summarizing – longer passage, main ideas into your own words
 all of them must be cited
 use them for support and credibility, thinks of other things to write
 read the entire text, and take notes, summarize, paraphrase, keywords

skim entire text, understand organization


How can one make things more  look for subject headings
understandable?  every fact or note that may be useful
 break down text into smaller pieces
 don’t write things verbatim

heading contains bibliographic info


When taking notes in a Cornell  left column contains “cues”
Note template, what goes in the  right column contains detailed facts
left column?
 bottom box contains a summary of information

variety of note taking tools

Citations are absolutely necessary when using work from sources that is not yours. One would use outside
sources to support their claim and make their paper and thesis credible. No matter how you utilize the information, you
must cite it.
