Transmission Lines & Waveguides (D1+D2)

1. A 100 Ω transmission line has an effective dielectric constant of 1.65. Find the shortest
open-circuited length of this line that appears at its input as a capacitor of 5 pF at 2.5
GHz. Repeat for an inductance of 5 nH.
2. Consider the transmission line circuit shown in the accompanying figure. Compute the
incident power, the reflected power, and the power transmitted into the infinite 75 _
line. Show that power conservation is satisfied.

3. Use the Smith chart to find the following quantities for the transmission line circuit
shown in the accompanying figure:
(a) The SWR on the line.
(b) The reflection coefficient at the load.
(c) The load admittance.
(d) The input impedance of the line at 0.2  from the load and input impedance of line.
(e) The distance from the load to the first voltage minimum and maximum.

4. On a 150-Ω lossless transmission line, the following observations were noted: distance
of first voltage minimum from the load = 3 cm; distance of first voltage maximum from
the load = 9 cm; S = 3. Find ZL.
5. The input impedance of a 31-cm-long lossless transmission line of unknown
characteristic impedance was measured at 1 MHz. With the line terminated in a short
circuit, the measurement yielded an input impedance equivalent to an inductor with
inductance of 0.064 μH, and when the line was open circuited, the measurement yielded
an input impedance equivalent to a capacitor with capacitance of 40 pF. Find Z0 of the
line, the phase velocity, and the relative permittivity of the insulating material.

6. Find the input impedance (Zin) for a lossless transmission line shown in below:

7. A 100MHz generator with Vg=10∠0° (V) and internal resistance 50Ω is connected to a

lossless 50Ω air line that is 3.6m long and terminated in a 25+j25(Ω) load. Find (a) V(z)
at a location z from the generator, (b) Vi at the input terminals and VL at the load, (c) the

voltage standing-wave radio on the line, and (d) the average power delivered to the
load.
8. The open-circuit and short-circuit impedances measured at the input terminals of an air-
spaced transmission line 4m long are 250∠-50°Ω and 360∠20°Ω, respectively. (a)
Determine Z0, α, and β of the line. (b) Determine R, L, G, and C.

9. Find the input impedance (Zin) and VSWR of the transmission line as shown in figure:
