Wait.. What is it in the first place?

It is a sacrament where by practice we ask for forgiveness from God by confessing our sins to him
and therefore be reconciled with him and be purified (conceptually and spiritually).

Today, the Sacrament of Confession is mediated by the (but not limited to) . But at the time
of Jesus, it was the who carried extreme authority to pronounce either to or
the sins done by man.

"If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any,
they have been retained," (John 20:23).

But the priests and the apostles, weren’t given the authority to FORGIVE sins rather they have
been given the authority to PRONOUNCE that your sins “have been forgiven”.

RECONCILLATION
MERCY

The Lord is Kind and Merciful Desiring most of all our Salvation
RECONCILLATION
MERCY
To speak of reconciliation and penance is for the men and
women of our time an invitation to rediscover, translated into
their own way of speaking, the very words with which our savior
and teacher Jesus Christ began his preaching: "Repent, and
believe in the Gospel,” that is to say, accept the good news of
love, of adoption as children of God and hence of brotherhood.

John Paul II Reconciliatio et Paenitentia

THEREFORE
RECONCILLATION IS…
Self-denial
Mortification
self-abnegation

Essentially means curbing, taming, controlling, dying to the

cravings, comforts, lusts, longings and appetites of the flesh of
this world

In order to live more and intimately with Jesus

THEREFORE
RECONCILLATION IS…

Jesus has always had many who love His heavenly kingdom, but few who
bear His Cross. He has many who desire consolation but few who care for
trial. He finds many to share His table, but few to take part in His
fasting. All desire to be happy with Him few wish to suffer anything for
Him. Many follow Him to the breaking of the bread, but few to drinking
the chalice of His Passion. Many revere His miracles but few the Cross.
Thomas a Kempis
THEREFORE
RECONCILLATION IS…

Unless the grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it remains alone; but if it dies, it will
produce much fruit.

Unless you take up your cross and follow me you cannot be my disciple

We forget the need for penance, self-denial, and sacrifice, we forget the
fact that of our selfishness. When we forget we are sinners, we forget
our need for Christ. And when we forget Christ, we forget everything!
John Paul II
