Introduction & Importance of

WOMEN SAFETY BOOKLET
in our day to day lives
What does Safety mean to you?
In today's world, as women overflow with confidence to define their purpose with respect and
equality, they are alleged to be independent and strong. Unfortunately, for all the bravery a
woman puts up with, the blanket of fear still mingles around her as an aroma that she can't get rid
of, putting all her strength to waste. A woman, no matter how strong, thinks twice before walking
down an alley or entering an empty house.

Safety can be defined as an environment that makes one feel secure and protected from any
threat. “You are your own last line of defense in safety. It boils down to you.” Safety not only
means to be secure, it also holds awareness and self-responsibility. As in the end, we ourselves
are responsible for our own actions, and only we can help ourselves.

I have observed and researched during my self-defense workshops that Indian women are
taught to shut an eye and remain silent if they're assaulted as it might put a stigma on their culture
and/or values that might bring dishonor to their families. But is her silence, and ignorance of the
society, in general, a source of encouragement to drive the domestic abusers, and eve-teasers
to continue their shenanigans?

I believe it is! And that's why this book portrays a medium for women to get in touch with their
strength and prove every individual that they can take their own responsibility. I, hereby put in all
my efforts for the empowerment of women, as this nation needs a wake-up call.

So, before you move on the next page, I'd be happy to know that you have taken a step towards
facing every challenge that comes in your path. All you must do is, be strong, smart and confident
enough to not let anyone put you in a dilemma, and you, therefore, are ready to fight for yourself.

FOREWORD

This is an extremely practical and engaging reference guide on women safety and security
by a seasoned professional from the industry. A young woman whose aim and passion is to
create a safer society with her initiative MY SECURITY MY RESPONSIBILITY. It is truly a
realistic work and an exceptional woman safety handbook.

This book is aimed towards unleashing the fierce, brave, limitless goddess that is present
inside every woman , We must remember that confident and safe woman develops a
stronger and happier nation.

Through this educative book the readers can actually self-work and self help. It would prove
equally good for trainers as a comprehensive guideline and a valuable reference.
Self Defense training for girls needs to be incorporated in all educational institutions. It will
enable women to not only protect themselves, but equally enhance their self confidence and
self worth.

Through this workbook I visualize the women in particular and society in general to
empower themselves physically, mentally and psychologically and help create a strong and
secure society.

Self defense is not an option but mandatory and cuts across gender, age, culture and time
has come when it needs to be an integral part of all academic instates and corporate.

Best wishes,

CORPORATE ENDORSEMENT

Women are at risk of violence both in public and private spheres, in and around the home,
in neighbourhoods and at city level. Risk is influenced by urban design choices and the
organisation of public services including transport and energy, amongst other things.
Women experience more insecurity which can restrict their access and use of the city.

To create inclusive environment that respect the rights of everyone, we need to create
conditions and physical environments where women, men, girls and boys can live, work, go
to school, move around, and socialise without fear of harm. We also need to change
attitudes and policies that perpetuate violence against women.

I sincerely applaud Veena for writing this wonderful book with great insight for corporates to
reflect upon themselves and make their environment safer for women and will urge all to
make use of Veena's experience in this field which has come out so appropriately in this
book to make this society a better place to live in.

Congratulations Veena on this wonderful piece of work, the security fraternity including
women from all walks of life will be eagerly waiting for your next work soon.

Regards.

WHY THIS HANDBOOK ?

The numbers are staggering by any

imagination, and shocking to the
core.

In 2012, 24,923 rape cases were

reported across India. That would be
one every 21 minutes. But after the
gruesome Nirbhaya incident, one
would have expected the conscience
of the nation to be shaken. But, no!

The numbers have been climbing,

and it is becoming more dangerous
for women with every passing day.
According to the National Crime
Records Bureau (NCRB), the number
shot up to over 34,600 in 2015. That
would be one rape every 15 minutes.

Think again. One every fifteen

minutes! And this was three years
ago. The situation today is grim, and
it is just as scary. In half the cities
and towns you can think of, women
think twice before venturing out
after dusk. In some, they don't even
step out. If authorities can't protect
them, women need to do it
themselves.

And therein lies the significance of

this handbook. Self-defence has to
be the starting point

Student Security & Safety
Outstation Travel HOTEL

Many students travel abroad for pursuing their higher studies. However, they are also vulnerable towards
being potential targets of crime. While counseling and coaching international students, I focus on creating an
awareness of the dangers which a student may encounter upon his/her arrival to the foreign country, as well
as the major safety concerns which one needs to follow, to prevent occurrence of unfavorable incidents. It is
essential for students to keep emergency numbers handy with them, so that they can immediately call for
help. During the Foreigner Student Safety Program sessions, I emphasize on the following topics:
· Safety Tips
· Street Safety
· How to call for help
· Personal Safety
· Banking Security
· Apartment Security
· Theft
· Pick-pocketing
· Sexual Harassment for women

Personal Security Do's and Don't Best Practices

Try not using the public transport (cabs, buses or autos) at night, especially when you're
travelling alone.
If you are travelling via train overnight, keep your belongings safe, and travel with known or
trustworthy companions. Some trains also have a “ladies only” compartment.

Also, travelling in sleeper class on trains should be avoided, but while you are at it, one should sleep
in the upper bunk, as to avoid unwanted attention.

When travelling via cab, always make sure it's an official or commercial cab, either app-based or
booked from a hotel or airport, since their drivers are mostly licensed. Avoid the use of street
cabs and or shared cabs where your passenger is unknown.

Do’s and Don'ts Continued
Don't unnecessarily share your details with the cab driver, for instance, your place of stay, or your
travel plans. Not that you can't hold a conversation, but it doesn't have to be about your life or
anything personal. Try sitting on the back seat, always, make sure the doors are locked, and
don't let the driver pick up any additional passengers.

ü Make sure your hotel stay is around a nice clean area to avoid unnecessary attention.
Also, check through the hotel room's peep hole always before you open the door. If you still
don't trust the hotel's security, you can always buy a door stop from any shop nearby to add
an extra layer of security.

ü If subjected to an inappropriate circumstance, immediately call for help to the

management, and/or to the police.

ü Don't take an alley or isolated area while walking back at any hour, especially at night. Try
avoiding any kind of entertainment taking place outside or at a well known venue during night
hours. If that's the case, always try and see if your known-one can either drop you back and/or
you can go back at a nominal hour.

Communication Tools FOR traveler.

Police emergency number: 100 /women helpine 1091

· One should always carry a working mobile phone, through which you can make calls. If not
that, then the mobile should have internet access to atleast make calls over the net. You
can ask for a local SIM card from your contact person in india.

· Always keep your emergency or S.O.S contacts handy, so that by just pressing of few
buttons, they'll get a notification that you need help.

· Make sure atleast one of your family members or close friends, know where you're
heading so just in case even if you are not able to contact them when in problem, they'll
know exactly where to find you.

· Also, always try charging your phone before leaving the house. You never know for how
long you can be out.

Women Special Legal Rights

DURING DISTRESS
1. Free Legal Aid
Always be accompanied with lawyer when you go to file a complaint or FIR against any mishappening so as to ensure that the complaint is
properly lodged and there no discrepancies.

2. Right to Privacy while recording Statements

A woman can record her statement in presence of only one Police officer and a lady constable in a convenient place that is not crowded so
that no fourth party can overhear it. The Police are duty bound, by law, to upkeep the privacy of a woman intact and closed.

3. Time doesn't Matter

There is no time limit for filing an FIR by rape or a molestation victim. In other words, the police cannot refuse to register an FIR even if
considerable period of time has elapsed since the incident of rape or molestation took place.

4. Email to the Rescue

As per the recent guideline by the Delhi police, if any victim cannot come to the Police Station she can email or send a written complaint
through registered post to the Deputy Commissioner or the Commissioner of Police based on which FIR will be registered. Also, the Police
can then go personally to the residence of the victim and take the statement.

5. Cops Can't Say NO

A victim can register an FIR in any police station under the Zero FIR ruling of the Supreme Court. If a police station refuses to lodge the FIR,
a woman in that case can register the same in any police station.

6. No Arrest after Sunset

A woman cannot be arrested after sunset and before sunrise. All the dealings should be done in the day time in presence of a woman
constable. If under special and urgent cases a woman has to be arrested after sunset, the Police needs to get a special in written warrant by
the magistrate.

7. Cannot be called to the Police Station

Under Section 160 of Cr PC, a woman cannot be called for interrogation in Police Station. Her statement should be recorded at her
residence in presence of a woman constable and her family.

8. The Doctor can't decide

A case of rape cannot be dismissed even if the doctor says that rape has not taken place. A rape victim should be examined medically as
per the provisions of Section 164A of Criminal Procedure Code (Cr PC), and only the report acts as a proof.

9. Protect your Identity

Under no circumstances the name of the rape victim can be revealed. Neither the Police nor the media can publish or leak out the name.
The identity remains intact and if the identity is disclosed it is punishable as per the Section 228-A of the Indian Penal Code.

10. Employers must protect

In terms of the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, an Employer is duty bound to create a Sexual Harassment Complaint Committee
within the organisation for the redressal of complaints relating to sexual harassment at work place. The said Committee should be headed
by a woman and should be 50% women as its members.

Step 1: Straighten your fingers.

Step3: Now curl your thumb over your already curled fingers. Ensure that your thumb is
always placed on top of the fingers.

From The Authors Desk

Women safety workshop is need of the hours and we are proud to say
that we conduct the same as per given details
ABOUT WORKSHOP:
In the wake of increasing incidents of violence against women in the country, safety and security
of women has become imperative. Through our Women Safety and Security Workshops, we
aim at educating women about ensuring their physical safety and emotional well-being Many
people misconstrue that the self-defense tactics for men and women are the same. However,
we believe that self-defense for women, is a different and complex technique. A brawl between
two men, and that of a woman defending herself from a man – are two very disparate scenarios.
Almost all women, at some point or the other, become victims to violent crimes. Incidents of eve
teasing and rape have become very common. The best way out is to empower oneself with the
right information & technique. By conducting Self-Defense trainings and camps at schools,
colleges, communities, and public places, I aim to reach out to all men, women, and children, of
our society, to prepare them physically & mentally to confront untoward incidents. I believe that
parents should allow their girl child to master any form of martial art, which would enable her to
protect herself from violence and harassment.
Women Safety and Security Workshop is made on the reality basis day to day situations which
helps the participants understand the dos and don'ts with some basic tactics so that they can
avoid the circumstances if they gauged the threat and possibilities of getting harmed.
