The Problem and Its Background

Background of the Study

Hussein (2013) states that the concept of dynamic learning reached

beyond training students to become self-determined learner’s and that it is a new

philosophy of purposeful teaching.

In connection to this, parallel class as part of the dynamic learning program

is exposing the students and the teachers to the non-formal and non-traditional

classroom set up. Thus, it teaches the students to become more self-reliant with

their learning. Through various cooperative and active learning activities,

teachers could give less supervision upon their students.

Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) believes with the Activity-

based Multi-domain Learning, in simple terms “Active Learning” or “Parallel

Classes” which is a teaching method that strives to more directly involve

students in the learning process. In this CVIF program one of its process-induced

learning features is the idea of Learning by Doing, where it promotes 70% of

Learners’ Independent Activity and 30% for Teacher’s Lecture/Discussion.

According to Felder (2009), active learning means “students doing anything

but sitting and listening to a lecture. It means they are doing something and

thinking about things. Cooperative learning which is a form of active learning

which means students work together in teams on some sort of a structured

exercise. Student take individual responsibility for different pieces of the

assigned task and are held accountable for what they do and what everyone else

does. The researchers decided to make a study about parallel class in order to

know if it would be effective in some subjects like the practical research 1 since

this subject takes time to accomplish.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the effectiveness of parallel classes to the

academic performance of grade 11 ABM student from 1-A to 4-A in practical

research 1.

This research wanted to answer the following questions:

 Is there a significant difference in the academic performance of grade

11 ABM students in practical research 1 when exposed to parallel

class?

 Is there a significant improvement in using parallel class as a

strategy to academic performance of the learners?

 Are there significant enhancement activities that can be

formulated based on the results of this study?

Hypotheses

The researchers’ hypotheses are shown as follows:

• There is a significant difference in the academic performance of grade 11

ABM students in practical research 1 when exposed to parallel class.

• There is a significant improvement in using parallel class as a

strategy to academic performance of the learners.

• There are significant enhancement activities that can be formulated

based on the results of this study.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is exclusive to determine if the parallel classes to the academic

performance in practical research 1 is effective through a survey-questionnaire

that was conducted during the first semester of the school year 2019-2020.
The survey-questionnaires will answer by two hundred (200) Grade 11

ABM students of PHINMA-University of Pangasinan.

The gather answers will be used to determine whether the parallel classes

to the academic performance in practical research 1 does really effectiveness.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study is significant to the following group:

Students: This study may give information to the students about how effectively

of parallel classes to the academic performance of students in practical research.

It will help students to be knowledgeable about the Effectiveness of parallel

classes to the academic performance of students in practical research 1.

Teacher, This study may serve as the way to the teacher to determine the

students who are effectively learned in parallel classes .

Parents, This study is significant to the parents of every student to help them

know if their children are effectively learned into a parallel classes in practical

research 1 and if these affect their academic performance.

Readers, This study may help the readers to know the effectiveness of parallel

classes to the academic performance in Practical Research 1.

Future researcher, It would help the future researchers that are interested in

this study. It will serve as their basis and their background about their research.
Definition of Terms

 Survey-questionnaire - a set of questions used in a survey

 Parallel Classes – a strategy in the academe field used to teach students

where in there are clusters or classes but with the same teachers, subject

and time.
