I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the students in Math 7 must be able to:
• change scientific notation to regular notation and vice versa.
• discuss the process in changing SN to RN and vice versa
• constructs examples on changing SN to RN and vice versa

Content: Numbers and Number Sense

Content Standards: demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sets and the real
number system.
Performance Standards: is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets and
real numbers and solve these in a variety of strategies.
Learning Competency: 17. writes numbers in scientific notation and vice versa.
Code: M7NS-Ii-1

II. SUBJECT MATTER

a. Topic
Scientific Notations
b. References
E-Math, Elementary Algebra. 2010. Oronce, Orlando A. and Mendoza, Marilyn O.
c. Time allotment

d. Instructional materials
Manila Paper, Felp Tip Pen, Bond Papers

III. PROCEDURE (Lesson Development)

i. Prayer
ii. Greetings
iii. Checking of Attendance
iv. Review

B. Lesson Proper (Presentation)

i. ACTIVITY
Activity 1. Look at the following examples below and make some conclusions.
The following numbers are being changed to Scientific Notations.
1.) 𝟐𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝟐. 𝟔 × 𝟏𝟎𝟑
2.) 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝟐. 𝟔 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟑

ii. ANALYSIS
Q1. What have you observed of the two examples and how they are being changed
to Scientific Notations?
A1. The numbers are being converted to Scientific Notation (SN) with respect to the
location of the point and the count of the movement of the point. If the number is a
whole number, the exponent of the SN is positive. If the number is in a decimal form, the
SN will have a negative exponent.
iii. ABSTRACTION
Q1. What is a Scientific Notation? Regular Notation?
A1. Regular Notation vs. Scientific Notation
Regular Notation (RN) - The standard way that we write our numbers.
Ex: Two Hundred and Eight Million is written - 280,000,000.
Scientific Notation (SN) - A shorthanded way of writing really large or really small
numbers. In SN a number is written as the product of two factors.
Ex: 280,000,000 can be written in scientific notation as 2.8 𝑥 108

Q2. How to change Regular Notation to Scientific Notation?

A2.

Q3. How to change Scientific Notation to Regular Notation?

A3.
Q4. What is the significance of using Scientific Notation?
A4. Scientific Notation is used by many scientists and mathematicians to easily write too
large or too small numbers.

iv. APPLICATION
Change the following from SN to RN or the other way.

IV. ASSESSMENT (Evaluation)

B. Formative (Assessment as Learning)

Change the following to Regular Notation. Change the following to Scientific Notation.

V. ASSIGNMENT (Agreement)
Study and examine how the numbers are being changed, from Regular Notation to
Scientific Notation and vice versa.
