Gangs Affect our Society

in a
Negative Way

What Happens to Gang Memebers?
Law enforcement data indicate that at least 780,000 members of street and prison gangs
currently reside within communities across the country and at least another 123,000 documented
members are incarcerated in state correctional facilities.
Negative impacts of gang
violence in our society

A 5-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being struck in a suspected gang-related
shooting in North Carolina.

According to the national drug intelligence center Street gangs are the primary
distributors of illegal drugs on the streets of the United States. Gangs also smuggle
drugs into the U.S and produce and transport drugs within the country.

Wilmington Police are investigating a number of shootings that happened during the
Thanksgiving holiday investigators believe five of the six shootings were gang related
How does gang violence affect our
society?
We need to stop gang violence in our community
because it will decrease:
1. Drug Trafficking
2. Gun violence and retaliation
3. Innocent deaths
Drug Trafficking

Many Hispanic and, to a lesser extent, African American gangs are gaining control over
drug distribution outside urban areas that were previously supplied by local independent
dealers or small local criminal groups.
Gun Violence and Retaliation

Most murders in the U.S. are committed with firearms. In 2005, 477,040 people
were victims of a crime committed by firearms. 11,346 people died as a result of the
firearm violence.
Innocent Deaths caused by Gang violence
Eric Adorno was mistaken for a gang member because he wore a red football jersey.

Lacy Ferguson was shot to death after she and her boyfriend bought a pack of cigarettes.

Josue Huerta was winning his battle with cancer but lost his life to gang violence.

And Manuel Rayas was shot, sniper-style, as he stood on the lawn at a birthday party while
children jumped in an inflatable bounce house nearby.

How can we prevent the youth from
joining gangs?
Increasing adult supervision of students after school.

Providing gang awareness training for school personnel, parents,


and students.

Strengthening families.

Addressing elevated risk factors for joining a gang.


Conclusion

In conclusion gangs violence does affect our society in a


negative way, and once your’e in theres no easy way out.
