````````` Advanced Summative Project: Cell-School Analogies
To understand the different parts of a cell and their functions, we will compare a cell to a school.
We will use analogies to compare a specific part of the cell to a specific part of the school.
For example: The nucleus of the cell is like the principal’s office in a school because the
nucleus directs the activities of the cell similar to how a principal directs activities in a
school.
1. Protein is an important product of a cell, and numerous parts in the cell interact with
protein. To set up your analogies correctly you need to determine what the school is
“making.” This will be your protein.
The protein is like __________________ in a school because proteins are made in the
cells similar to how ___________________ are made in a school.
2. List different parts of the school and what you think their functions are. Be creative. You
may want numerous parts in the school to give yourself options when you start your cell
analogies.
Part of a school Function
Planes For the students to learn how to fly them
and get experience
Simulator to get students familiar with the controls
and other things
Runway So the planes can take off
Hanger Where the planes are stored
instructors To teach pilots how to fly the planes
Canteen Where the pilots eat food
Hallway So the pilotts can get to their classes
Outer wall Keeps out crims and other people trying
to get in with out permission
Principal To keep the rules follow and decides what
happens at the school
Gate Controls what goes in and out of the fight
school
Solar panels Generate energy for the school and the
schools electronics use it like our bodys
use food for energy
Piolets They come to learn how to fly planes and
get their pilots licences
Concrete Makes the shape of the school
Rebar Holds the school together and gives it itś
shape
Garbage service Takes the garbage from the school away
3. You must create analogies with at least ten parts of the cell. Use the format of the
previous example when writing your analogies.
Required parts include: nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts,
lysosome, and mitochondria
Additional parts to include: endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi apparatus, vacuole,
cytoskeleton, ribosomes, vesicles
Bonus: Include 12 parts of the cell for up to five bonus points
Cell Part School Part
Nucleus principle
michtioderion Cafeteria
Cell membranes Gate
Cell wall Outer walls
Protein pilots
Chloroplast Solar panels
vacuoles Hanger
Cytoskeleton rebar
Cytoplasm Hallways
lysosome Garbage service
4. Draw and color a floor plan of your school. You can use plain white paper or grid
paper.
5. Create a color-coded key that identifies the part of the school and the part of cell.
6. Final submission must include
a. Floor plan
b. Color-coded key
c. Analogies
Cafeteria
Inner walls
Outer walls
pilots
Solar panels
Hanger
Concrete
Rebar
Garbage service
